This Sunday - New glocals Site Launch
Howdy glocals

This Sunday (Aug 9) we'll launch the new glocals site. You don't need to do anything, and all your data will move automatically to the new site.

Here's how the site transfer will happen, and how it will affect our members.

Sunday noon: current site goes down
During that time, we'll be making data transfers, and you won't be able to use the site.

Sunday evening: new site goes up
Once we finish transferring the data, we will ‘activate’ the new site, and it will replace the current site.  So when you go to www.glocals.com, you'll get to the new site.
You will be able to login to the new site with the same email address and password you always use, and all of your information and posts will not be changed.

We expect some bugs on the new site - pls be patient with us...
We spent a lot of time testing the new site, but we’re sure some bugs will still come up after we launch. We'll track and deal with all of them on high priority over the next few weeks. We'll also open a public ‘Bugs' forum, so you can see what we're working on and report stuff than needs fixing.

See the new site now
The new site is still in 'test mode' but you can see & play with it here.

Thanks a lot, and see you on the new site!
We're very excited + scared + happy + nervous about the new launch, but that's a topic for the next newsletter...(-;

Update:

We're still on track for launching tomorrow (Sunday).

Oded (siteAdmin) is working 24/7 with the programmers to solve some final bugs (BIG THANKS to all members who are reporting the bugs to us!).

The feeling that me and Oded have is bizzare: it's a mix of a lot of excitment, but also fear of how the site transfer will work on the tech side and on the user-feedback side.

Tomorrow we'll start seeing the answers...(-:

Nixon:

Thanks. We had a bug on the new homepage until few min ago, but it seems to be fixed now. Poor siteAdmin is working his little hairy ass off on this!!!

Would you mind trying to access it again, and tell us if there's still issues?

Thanks, Nir

Thanks John.

I see SiteAdmin (Oded) just answered this on another thread, so here's a copy-paste of his reply:

----------
We do have a chat, and its alot more stable than the current one.

BUT

1. For the first few days after we launch the new site, the chat will be disabled.
We want to take some time to make sure the site is stable before adding the chat to the mix.

2. We changed the chat settings a bit so that people can only chat with their friends.
We'll run it like that for a while, and then, if people want it, we'll add the option to chat with non friends again

Thanks,

Oded

From experience, I would open the chat function ASAP. I see that a lot of people use it as a means of introducing themselves (and eventually being added to ones friends list). Other people also prefer to ask a question or ask for more detail about a specific post via the chat function.

My vote. Open chat as soon as the site is stable.

Best,

Verbier

Verbier:

Thanks. Let me pick your brainds here for a sec. The key thinking behind experimenting with a 'friends only' chat is that we hear consistant feedback from female members who often get bombarded by un-wanted male chat requests (I wish I had the same issue with ladies chatting me up!).

We thought of keeping an open chat and just allowing members an easier way to refuse chats or to blocks chatters, but then thought of experimenting with going all the way to 'friends only' for a while.

What think?

I would prefer an open chat as well. Much easier to get introduced to new people

I understand the problem but think you might be using a sledge hammer where a tack hammer might be more appropriate.

You could (if technically you can handle it), let people themselves define friends only chats (rather than you doing it at the site level). In that case, others should be able to see that the individual only accepts chats from friends.

Thanks Verbier - that might be the solution we go for in the end.

Right now Im swamped with last minute fixes and the migration checklist.

Once we're online, we'll start making the changes and improvements based on member feedback.

Thanks again

Oded

I agree with Verbier, on accepting chats from friends only. And the earlier comment on women getting chat invitations from men we do not know. Tough to balance.

Why not create an option where we can chat with friends, then an option to accept chats from others who are not on friends? (like an 'opt out'). yet allow the chat from the non-friend (if accepted) only to run live at the time of request, and should further chats with non friends be desired, allow a pop up message to say 'if you would like to continue live chat in the future with X, please click here'?

Thanks for keeping us ladies who are being solicited for chats from 'repeat offenders' who are not in the friends list from being bombarded! I think it is great that you are keeping our interests in mind!

and my I further add, I do like the option to accept or decline from non friends as I am one of those many ladies that get hit for a chat from people I do not know! :)

I dont see where there is a problem with chats. If you get a chat from someone you dont want to chat to just click ignore. It only takes a second
