Ok, confession time, I am not very good at maths. As some of you know, my teacher at school once asked me "what does 2 apples + another 2 apples make you?" My silly answer was "an apple pie", to which her witty retort was "pie is 3.1415 and so at least you were almost correct Phil".
If people ask me now what 2+2 is then I simply suggest they find a dodgy accountant who might be willing to make 2+2 equal whatever they like. Can equal 18 million dollars with enough change left over to buy a pair of diamond encrusted cowboy boots complete with matching jockstrap. Oh and don't worry about the files titled "off-balance sheet transactions" as they will be shredded by lunchtime.
But I digress, my maths really takes a hit when I compare the GoL membership total with the number of "views" each posting gets in the forums. Circa 10,000 lovely members and the average postings get only 50 to a 100 views? Of course not everyone is going to be interested in reading every posting, especially some of my less thrilling contributions with titles like "Are fish waterproof?" which lets face it is about as useful as a trap-door in a canoe. My apologies. Yet for non-Phil postings I would still have thought that the average view rates would be higher, perhaps 500 views (5% of membership) or more.
I was under the impression that the forums were the heart and soul of the website, but perhaps things have evolved. Perhaps people spend more time chatting online and increasing their network of friends via that route which is fine. Or does the low view rates for postings imply that there might be a lack of interesting or discussion worthy material in the forums???
A GoL member in a previous posting hinted at the introduction of a "Gossip Forum" and whilst that would probably see increased view rates, I have a feeling the subsequent fallouts would induce a decline in the GoL membership total. Light-hearted gossip and rumours between genuine friends who all know the facts is one thing. Yet gossip and rumours have been used in more hurtful ways and I would not suggest a forum for it. I can sympathise with the thought that being on GoL can sometimes feel like a soap opera, but at least the extent of exposure is largely at the choice of each individual member as to how much they wish to feature.
As for the concept of "what happens in place XYZ, stays in place XYZ"....not sure that has been applied exactly, not to any venue anywhere. Sometimes seems that the rumours of who is with who gets round before the couple in question have even locked themselves in a toilet to consumate their eternal love. Anyone interested in the beautiful romance and meaningful relationships that allegedly take place at various venues could easily show up each night to observe it themselves. Apparently some wannabe playboys and It girls can really entertain! What is the motto exactly...."until dawn do we part"???
If someone wishes their friends network to resemble notches on their bedpost then it is none of my business. What consenting adults chose to do is up to them and as long it does not damage the reputation of the website or other members then it does not bother me.
Probably best to take care with Chinese whispers too. For instance, a man and a woman who are just good friends, nothing more, have dinner at a restaurant. One of their friends hears about it and tells another friend, who tells another friend who juices up the story a bit by saying "the two people having dinner were holding hands, and the man was commenting on her pink bracelet".....the story continues to be past from person to person and before you know it the phrase "holding hands" and "pink bracelet" have been mistakenly amalgamated into "pink furry hand-cuffs" and suddenly the rumours are flying! Fortunately most people probably have sufficient brains not to believe extreme gossip but you never know.
Either way, it does not really resolve the dilemma of posting "views" and interesting forums. Perhaps members who have never posted anything on GoL could consider writing a few lines about something interesting of their choice? Or to write a reply to any forum posting which captured their attention? Perhaps even a non-waterproof fish could be located as a prize to the person who writes the posting which gets the most views?!?!?!?

Some interesting comments Phil. But the thing that puzzles me most is how does your post have 1300+ views some 8 hours after being posted??

Wow Phil.
I dont think any post has ever gotten so many views (over 1300 already), and within only 8 hours of being posted.
What's your secret?

I didn't really got how you managed to slide from "how many active members are on GOL" (which is a question I'de like to have the answer too myself, cf. bellow) to "leave my private life alone and get one"... but kind of nice job her man ! ;-)
To me, the heart of GOL is neither the forum, nor the chat, offers, adds or locked in toilets private activities, but member events where people, instead of staying home alone meet with new people and have fun together.
What I don't really get myself is the low rate of people joining (some) events. We where 4 on saturday night to go to Cully Jazz Festival. Ok, not everyone likes jazz. Fine, Lausanne might be frighteningly too far away for some expats (sounds funny, doesn't it ?). There were also many activities going on on saturday evening. But out of the, I belive, 1000 active members, only 4 per thousand are interested in free live jazz music ? I just can't believe it. (And for my nasty friends I can already hear saying "they just don't love you Hobbes !" it wasen't me but a girl posting the activity ;-))
Maybe GOL is "too" efficient in providing poeple new friends / party mates, and GOLers soon don't need GOL anymore to fill up they social lives. Any other assumption ?

I get a strong sense that there is a certain group of people who use GOL as a base for a Popularity Contest. I've seen pictures ever so often in the pictures forum from events where other GoL member were not invited. The same goes for the member activities review forum. Events are talked about that were not part of anything advertised or organized publicly on GOL. A lot of people who reply to these forums are part of this group. I think its great to have a "village" where you guys get together and have fun, however from outsiders (and I've been that outsider) it is very intimidating and can seem as though its part of some exclusive club. ( Which its not, by the way.) I feel sometimes some activities are reserved for a certain crowd that has its attending members already in mind. Dont' get me wrong, I see people like Julien T who are just great organizers and REALLY try to attract a crowd of people to connect them. And probably 95% of activites are organized in that respect.
Once you've established a good friends network (which is the purpose of GOL!) its great to keep that spirit alive on the place where it all started. HOWEVER, I feel that many times these forums are like reading a personal blog from a group of friends who know eachother really well. Honestly, I get tired of reading the same person (people) talk on and on about a subject 99% of people don't know about. Usually its an inside joke or situation.
Again, I think its great to have GOL to help maintain friendships it starts, but then when it is abused as a sort of "look at how cool we are" outlet...it discourages shy people (i'm not shy) from writing in the forums or attending events where they know noone.
Probably none of those people will reply to my thread anyway...

I am one of those ppl that is in the 'village' and it's not the first time i hear this comments. I agree with you on some things and disagree on lots of others.
I don't think that anyone in the group uses GOL as a popularity contest, we have been around for long, we know lots of ppl, we have some good friends .. and if you want to hear my honest opinion the forums where much more lively and fun when we were 200 but we were writing and commenting.
I don't know about GOL events to which ppl haven't been invited that are in the pictures ... so if you do please say what u are talking about, maybe you didn't see the post? if that happen .. well .. once we used to have a folder in the pic called "GOL is everywhere" cause it happened so many times that we went out with 1 or 2 friends and met other 15 golers (Happened to me at heaven last friday and i took pics) ... so it might also something that happened by chance.
Events get talked in the Activities Review cause if by word of mouth enough GOLers were there ... it's fun to write about it.
True, some groups have insider (to the 50 ppl that were there) jokes, and some there are 2 or 3 groups of ppl that regularly post in the activity review ... and as much as that can be not relevant to the ppl that weren't there .. it's relevant and fun for the ppl that joined the event. It might not be 100% fair, but some ppl have been around for long and are closer friends.
When i hear ppl complaining about the activity review being 'not relevant' to the outsider .. what i always wonder is .. why don't you post something urself (don;'t take it personally, it can be everyone) ... about an event or an activity you have been to?? Right now there are 3 groups that are closer, at the beginning it was one .. then other ppl started writing .. and so on. If no one writes the forum will be even less relevant then now.
I don't wanna start a polemic or an argument, in the end that's ur perception of how things are, and it's good to hear it. But to me GOL is like real life, some ppl get closer, some ppl are more party going and popular then others ... and there are inner circles of friends ... what makes GOL special is that whenver someone new joins an activity we try our best (I can speak for myself and few others that i know .. but I do think that this is the true GOL spirit) to make that person feel welcome and part of the group, and to be less intimidating that we might look like from outside. But in the end if ppl keep just watching and are not active ... I really think that there's nothing else we can do.
Vale - and yeah i will keep talking about random GOL events if i happen to meet 25 golers in a bar on a friday :)

Vale - and yeah i will keep talking about random GOL events if i happen to meet 25 golers in a bar on a friday :)

..especially because Phil's post is so long complex and ... funny that at some point i was laughing so much i lost track of the discussion.
But what I think for now is that ..
it's true, before GOL forums used to be much more lively, full of jokes, reviews and banters. Now they are not. Even thou i miss the good old ways i think it's the way things evolve. You get closer to some ppl and you have ur own circle of friends so instead of going out and meeting new ppl every day ...you do it once a week or once in a while .. or when it happens. Cause you might want to try and create a deeper friendship with some of the ppl you met, and in our busy life we don't always have time to take care of our friends and meet new ones.
And since there are more and mroe ppl and u get to know 100 vs 10 ... you can;t always post a review of whatever thing you have done ... there are too many events going on and ppl spread ... and well ... the whole thing becomes much more about going there, living the event and moving onto the next then .. chatting about it on the site. Also, we are all less close to each other (or more) so we either discuss things that matters to us 'live' or we just don't share them with 9000 strangers .. or 'mates'.
Basically to me it's just that GOL has evolved, like in real life, from a cool group of 100 active ppl, to lots of smaller groups, enabled by GOL to organize cool activites, keep in touch, meet new ppl, help new ppl in town, and ... have a choice and a balance between spending time with closer friends (that we made via GOL) and meeting new ones (but come newbies, you also have to make an effort and start posting ... if u are sick and tired of the same old jokes).
And to me that's the beauty of GOL, you have choices. Getting into a group of friends already existing (been there, done that, and true, sometimes is harsh), finding some good friends and stick to them, creating ur own group ...
and let's be honest, the old motto what happens in XYZ stays in XYZ .. was never true, we just liked to beleive it :p

I am a regular on a number of forums. one having well over 150,000 "active members" looking at the views there you are lucky to see many over 350 views.
For the amount of users to views, it is quite good here.

Didn't realize some people were "more popular" than others. Wasn't aware it was a contest....
Anyhoo,
At the end of the day, I think its great you found a group of people you click with! This is only what I think and I am only 1 person... ;) There are however events that are not posted, yet have pictures. One event that includes all (and only) "the village". - and was not posted on GOL. I'll let you figure out which one it is since you attended... ;)

they don’t bite;)
I haven't been part of GOL for long but it was by meeting one person through chance and getting involved in activities that I met others. Right from the beginning I couldn’t get over how welcoming everyone made you feel! I never once felt intimidated (ok maybe once but that was me jumping to conclusions before actually getting to know someone). If you participate in activities, you get to know more people and others better and I’ve found GOLers to always be welcoming when there is a new face in the crowd. No one deliberately excluding anyone.
As Vale said, it is very easy to head out with a couple of friends on a Friday night and end up running into an array of other GOLers….are those present not supposed to enjoy each others company and pull out a camera if the mood strikes, simply because it wasn’t a planned member activity??
People are bound to become closer with some people than others (that is life!) but that doesn't mean that they no longer want to meet new people.
If the pictures you are referring to involve a celebration, obviously one wants to celebrate certain events with their friends and was probably not intended to be a GOL activity but I’m sure it happens quite often that the majority of one’s friends are from GOL!
I didn’t realize that popularity contests existed outside of secondary school and the last time I checked there didn’t appear to be one here… perhaps that is just me being na?ve.

Almost fell off my chair when I saw the number of "views" these postings received!!! If I had known that was going to happen I would have written it better. Not sure if 1500+ members have even logged-in today, let alone read those postings. Perhaps there was some technical glitch or error. Whatever the explanation, if more members are active in the forums then that is great!
As for "Secrets to Writing Popular Postings"....well, wish I knew. Guess a title which sounds potentially controversial might attract readers, but ideally make sure it does not cause offense. Better apologise here and now for the title of my previous posting....anyone expecting a tabloid worthy "reader tells all" kind of story may have been disappointed that the word "confess" referred to a childhood lack of mathmatical dexterity.
In terms of subject matter, I aim to keep postings harmless yet interesting, fairly neutral and with an element of humour where appropriate, but nothing to which any major offense could be taken. Can be a tricky line to draw, plus all humans make mistakes so I keep my apologies and retraction messages on standby. Certainly not upset if my postings are deleted. The maintenance of amicable relations and community spirit is far more important.
Concur with Hobbes about the importance of member activities, attendance rates and also that GoL might have been so successful at creating friendships that perhaps some members use the site forums less often. Admittedly, I rarely enrol in listed GoL events, partly because diary pressures mean I am online briefly once a month or so to check e-mail, then sporadically online for longer periods to write postings, plus I am usually located on the other side of the country. Although have been making effort over the last 3 months by offering free beginner ski lessons to GoL members. Met new people that way which was great.
The direction of my previous posting may have been a tad vague, so I will summarise. Looking back over the forums I think a number of members have written excellent material. Simply seemed that the number of "views" were rather low in relationship to the membership total. I sympathise with those who propose a gossip forum and it is great that innovations for the site are put forward for discussion. Just in this case I share the views of those who did not support the idea and contributed my opinion of chinese whispers, rumours, gossip etc via a little humour and hypothetical illustration. Besides, there are so many interesting world events going on and so many interesting people on this site that perhaps sometimes a little more could be done to write/read wholesome postings.
Have access to the internet for a few more days before departure, so will do my best to take a spoonful of my own medicine and make the effort to write/read a few more wholesome postings myself. Although no promises that my postings will be any good! Best wishes, Phil

My opinion is that GoL is a reasonably level playing field. Every member is free to express their thoughts in a polite fashion which is great. Personally, I do not lose much sleep regarding the "village" or "non-village" issue. It is not something I know much about, but at the same time I can appreciate both sides of the debate.
In terms of access to GoL events or activities, my only project over the recent months was providing the free GoL ski lessons for beginners. Details of which were advertised publically and in advance on the Ski Forum. Admittedly they were very small-scale niche events, but my invitation was completely open to all GoL members. I offered lesson times to everyone who contacted me about it. Pleased to say the attendance rate was 100% (i.e. zero no-shows) and approximately half the people who attended were totally new contacts whom I was meeting for the first time.
Similarly, when attending Sindy/GoL parties it is a pleasure to be open-minded about meeting new people as well as current friends. For some pre-advertised and/or last-minute events I can understand that venue capacity might be very limited in which case I would like to think the allocation of places is conducted on a relatively equitable basis.

Just to clarify -
Cpott, I agree popularity contests are secondary school games but "some members are more popular than others"...NOT my words, those are of Hoiling (a member of the Village) from her thread above mine. Nice insinuation though....

Yes, there's a "Village". I complained myself some months ago about this "clique" I felt as elitist and highly unfriendly. Considering the fact that I've dated a girl who was part of it while I've never been invited to join made me feel... strange. I just don't care anymore.
Yes, some pictures where taken during private events never published on the forum. I feel it unfriendly, and I had raised that issue already.
Yes, some activities are voluntarily restricted to some members: new members, over 40, singles, couples, mums, "send me your private email to be on my friend list", non smoking, etc. Some make sense to me, some don't. By the way, some people who posted against events reserved for singles now organize some. This is arguable, but another topic.
But... that being said. Life is life, and life’s complex.
I joined GOL short after I got separated from my wife. My social life was close from zero. I discovered GOL by luck, and soon found that the best way to feel part of it was to get involved into it. So, for my first ever GOL party, I registered as volunteer. And it changed my life. I’ve organized and taken part in lots of activities since. I’ve met literally hundreds of people sailing, singing, partying, dancing salsa, waterskiing, cooking, playing board games, watching movies, rollerblading, skiing and even visiting a friend at hospital. I’ve dated a girl on GOL. And GOL has become so much integrated into my life that both can’t be separated anymore.
For all that, yes, I do like being “popular”. It’s not a competition as such, but I like it. Why shouldn’t I ? Everybody complains that Geneva is cold. It used to be for me as well (let remind you here that I’m a local folk!). Today, whenever I join a GOL event, people I’ve never met before tell me things like “so YOU’re the infamous Hobbes ? Nice to finally meet you !” or “I’ve read you post from this morning with interest, but I disagree”. In any case, it feels good. Because, instead of being lost numbers in a vast city, we already share something we can build a relationship on. For me, that’s GOL spirit.
Last exemple as an illustration on how private and public events can be mixed. On sat 24th Feb, I’ve invited my closest friends for a dinner out to celebrate my birthday. If I could, I’de invite all GOLers out for dinner. I can’t. On top of it, I simply wanted to share some valuable moments with some fewer and closer French speaking friends for the first part of the evening. Six of them being on GOL. We’ve later moved to Shakers, where we were supposed to meet more friends. Some from GOL, some not on GOL. With no surprise, many GOLers who had been taken part to the St-Patrick’s Day at Heaven ended up at Shakers too (club owned by a GOLer and where a very active member works, fyi). So, my private birthday mixed up with a GOL event. Fortunately enough, no one complained that they had not been invited to the dinner. But some people might have felt strange reading comments about it on the forum. I understand it, but shall I be sorry to have found so many friends through GOL ? Shall I refrain myself to have private events with my friends if they are on GOL too ? Should I leave GOL to make things clear ?
Finally, and I refer here to Hoiling’s post about no shows, even now that I don’t “need” to meet more people, I believe that I can sincerely say that I’ve given everyone I’ve met his / her chance. But some never shown up to my events, others never got in touch again, some never replied to my messages. Those can’t complain I stuck with the ones who did.
Make your move, it’s all in your hands !

.. that was not what val was trying to say. maybe the wording was a little unfortunate.
I am sure she meant something in terms of some members are
being more visible than more popular.
hope that this issue is settled now and we all can go back to more important things, like plucking our eyebrows for example.

i guess the wording in my previous post was a bit unfortunate, and since my english is not that great .. i did a litterary translation form italian. Popular = have more friends, know more ppl (since they have been around for quite a long time) go out more, are more visible. just love to show off more and are in every pictures ... take it in every of this possible way but not in a 'bad' high-school contest way. that's not what i meant.
In my little high school in italy we didn't have popularity contest as such, so .. I am not aware of what they look like or imply.
I didn't mean it in a bad way, and ppl that know me kinda know that i really don't care how 'popular' something or someone is, less of all myself.
So ... if we really need to keep this debate going .. I am fine with it and all for ideas exchange, and clarification of perception if needed, but let's not debate over a choice of wording.
Vale - me and my bad englih

I'm sorry to hear Nancy that you feel so badly about the village. However, there's nothing very mystical about it, it's just a loose group of friends that have mostly met through GoL.
Granted, all 10,000 people are not always invited every single time some or all of us go out but often it's just not feasible for the logistics... For example if I want to organise a small dinner at my own house I might prefer to extend the invitation only to some closer friends. Are you annoyed with that categorically or simply saying that in such cases we should not post anything on the forums and keep the pictures to ourselves even if most of those who attended are Golers? Don't talk about it and let the illusion of everyone-knows-everyone-equally-well remain?
I still think the spirit of openness and friendliness is very much alive on the site. Smaller groups like the Village are not meant to exclude others, they just form quite naturally when a group of people hang out together for a longer period of time.
There's also plenty of activities taking place with various groups of people. Coming to an already established group of friends is never easy but it's Geneva and most of us are expats - we've all started building our social lives pretty much from scratch here. Either be brave and go to the established group with an open mind and talk to them and hang around with them - the only way to be included in the inside jokes is to be there when they're made! Or if you don't feel like you fit in with a particular crowd... well there's plenty of others waiting to meet you so just mingle, find them and start your own group with an annoying array of inside jokes of your own. :)
I wish I could be equally good friends with all members but I don't think I'd have enough hours in the day to keep up the contacts - after all, I don't have the social prowess of Bemad. :) But that in no way implies that I wouldn't want to meet and talk to anyone outside my present group of friends. It's not a conspiracy or elitism - just the way human relationships work.

.. something is wrong here!!
I think i've been online so long that i had every phase of it.
I met ppl, i was/am in a so called 'exclusive .. ' group, I've welcomed new ppl, i felt sick and tired and just wanted to hang out with my friends, i wanted to meet new ppl so i tried to get to know ppl from another 'popular' group ... i felt intimidated and excluded ... i forced myself to be open minded and just keep trying ... i've met ppl that i don't like and they don't like me ... i stopped caring ...
I think that's called life :)

So bloody right !
"Either be brave and go to the established group with an open mind and talk to them and hang around with them - the only way to be included in the inside jokes is to be there when they're made! " that, once more, summ up in one sentence what I've tried to explain in... few more.
