Tips on being a consultant/freelancer in Switzerland

Hello,

I am sure there are many self-employed GLocals out there. I have just moved here and my husband will be joining me soon from the U.S. He is hoping to work for himself, and I'd like to learn more about what's required to do that legally in Switzerland. Any help or tips will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Gretchen

Hello,

You will find all informations on these websites. Infortunately, they are only in French :

www.ge.ch/etrangers-confederes/fr/

www.travailler-en-suisse.ch

www.ge.ch/oce/welcome.asp

You can also get informations in English on

www.eda.admin.ch/en/home

It gives you the adresses of all Swiss representations in the USA. The best is that your husband contacts the nearest representation and asks them for all formalities. It can take some 6-8 weeks getting all papers and the agreement.

Hope this can help you.

have a look at the website www.swisslabourcontractors.com which is in English.

Assuming your husband obtainbs a work permit with a US passport...

You have to register with the AVS (social security) as self-employed/freelance/independent.  If you have less than 4 clients this is oftern refused leaving you in the limbo of (perhaps) having a client but no legal means to work.  You then need to choose a payrolling company/labour leasing company/umbrella company who will take you on as an employee, invoice your customer and pay you a salary based on what you have invoiced your customer.  One such company is Swiss Labour Contractors - they speak 7 languages and are helpful.  Not a 9 to 5 bunch at all.
