To my American friends
This question is basically to my American friends, but others are welcome to respond as well...

Actually a friend of mine (from Switzerland) is in deep shit: he has purchased electronic goods worth $1000 from a website, whose retail shop is based out of the US. However, even after two weeks after he made the payment, he has not received the goods! Whats worse is that the site does not have a contact no published :(... only an email id, and they use that sparsely and only to pacify my buyer friend.

I would like to have ideas about what can be done regarding this situation. All ideas are welcome as I need them :)..... I did not give the site name on purpose, but if anyone needs to know, I have no problem in giving out the name.. maybe I find someone who owns the company :w00t:

Cheers

Avishek.

He should contact his credit card company and cancel the transaction.

Hello,

I do believe in fairies but not in Santa Claus and I think your friend will not see his goods delivered. His best chance is to try to recuperate his money.

I know that in the States there is an organization called the Better Business Bureau which investigates such claims. I've never used them but I know the system works.

http://www.bbb.org/online/

If your friend made his purchase with a credit card, he should also contact the credit card company and have them return his money if possible.

If he made a bank transfer, then I think the bank should help him out.

Good luck and less naivety in the future!

Mary

Actually he went ahead with the deal as he felt it was exciting......... poor him!!

@Free: Reg cancellation of the transaction, he tried to do the same, but is not able to, as the intermediate agency says that the seller picked the money from them... for the same reason, he is not able to claim refund.

@Mary: Thanks a lot for the info... I will surely pass them to my friend. I think this is the only thing he can do now

I don't if he told the the whole story, but the credit card company may not want to backup a fraudulent transaction. He shoud at least get in touch with one of their lawyers and seek advice and help. He can also see the Fédération romande des consommateurs (FRC) They may have a few tips for him.

@Mary, the online retail shop does not look to be registered with bbb.org!

which tells you something right there. If your friend lets the bbb know what happened, it may be that they can advise him AND they can investigate the "company" and expose them as frauds.

Unfortunately, I think your friend has lost his 1K. He could probably get a lawyer but then he probably would have to pay the lawyer more than 1K in the end to see justice.

I would say as others have said...to go talk to people at the BBB. I personally have never been in this situation and cannot be much help.
