To rent apartment in the Docteur Alfred Vincent street (Paquis)

Hello, everyone!

We are a family with two small kids (a toddler and a baby), and we found a very nice apartment to rent in the Docteur Alfred Vincent street (Paquis) near the Promenade area by the lake. Would it be safe to stay there with children? What about those red streets and selling drugs? We found out there are lot of sex shops and bars two streets up from the apartment building, so we have doubts now. I’ll be very grateful for your experiences and advices!

Pâquis can be a great experience in international living but you should also ask why such an attractive apartment is so easily available.

Also consider the area’s impact on the crèche and school facilities and, if you are planning to give private music tuition at home, any potential pupils.

All the best, R.

It could be quite noisy in the evenings, ask around or go there yourself around 23h on Thursdays and Fridays.

I've once rented a flat in Eaux-Vives on top of a "quiet" restaurant that turned out to be very noisy and a total nightmare , so I now always ask current tenants before renting a place.

Happily living in quiet and boring Grand Lancy for 4 years now :)

"What about those red streets and selling drugs?" Well, they're quite convenient Laughing

Despite its aspect, Les Pâquis is quite a safe area. It would be against drug dealers interest to bother people.

Thank you, Ritchie!

you are always very reasonable and always help me with your advises. about Why the apartment is available I thought that maybe we are just lucky? :) it is not cheap, has price not less than the average. Searching in this area We are directed mostly by location which is good for us (not far from chosen crèche, not far from work of my husband, not far from future school) and also by being close to most necessary things like doctors, hospitals, stores etc... we are still thinking. We need an apartment more or less in between Versoix and Central part of Geneva (Rue Chemin Louis-Dunant). We were thinking in the beginning to rent a house somewhere further from center but people say that the traffic is very heavy in Geneva. Some people said that leaving far from Geneva center is like living not in Geneva at all, but it is opinion of single people and for me personally doesn’t say much. With kids I’m searching for comfort. So for us the question is open about where it is better to live with the kids...

Thank you, geojusto!

What I’m worried about is the traffic jam. My husband is going to work in the central Geneva and my son will go to crèche in Versoix. what would you say about traffic in the morning going in those directions from Grand Lancy? Another question: don’t you think isolated living in a “boring” neighborhood? I don’t mean bars and night life:))  I mean far from shops, doctors, sportclubs etc.

Hi, Lexa! this conveniency may vary from one person to another:) it makes sense that bothering people too much is not beneficient for the drug dealers. There are other things there too, like prostitution, sexshops, bars etc. but I imagine that it is not in the whole neighborhood of Paquis, trying to understand how it is in that certain street Docteur Alfred Vincent. Thank you for your reply!

Living in Pâquis with a husband working in chemin Louis Dunant, a child in a crèche in Versoix and another child attending an unnamed school (in perhaps yet another district) doesn’t sound very logical or practical.

Moreover, where are you going to park a car in Pâquis ?

The university hospital, many clinics and medical specialists  in private practice are located in and around Champel and Plainpalais which are on the left bank — although no area in and around the city is devoid of excellent medical care.

As for living further out, communes such as Grand Lancy (and many others) have plenty of shops and amenities, lively community ewvents and often more sports facilities..  They’re not back waters in the back of beyond.
