To the geeks on here: what is a good NAS for downloading and HD streaming to PS3/TV

Specifically looking for these features:

Ability to download torrents on its own without a PC

eSata and ideally USB 3 connectivity

Ability to stream HD content to PS3 and maybe later down the road to a DLNA TV when I get one - without a computer

Ability to demux/transcode on-the-fly ideally

Wifi connectivity a plus

PS: If you didn't understand the title you probably shouldn't try your hand at answering ;)

Why not an ultra-small low-end PC running Linux or Windows?  A 250 Sfr netbook could do it if you drop the eSATA requirement.

Because

- I would need to turn it on and off vs always running

- It would lack the storage space

- It would lack the processing power to transcode on-the-fly

- I already have two laptops

- I can get a NAS that does all the above in that price range

Hey I just saw your suggestions now, weird that I didn't get a notification.

The La Cie one is only for storage it seems, no processor so it cannot stream/demux so it doesn't want to fit the bill. Synology would work but it looks like I can do better in that price range:

http://www.qnap.com/en/index.php?lang=en&sn=822&c=351&sc=514&t=523&n=3377

Also what is your third recommendation, you mention 3 but only 2 are listed.

My bad, i read "the entry level" as "three" entry level... I just found this, same price range as the QNAP, new product and it looks amazing on paper:

http://www.thecus.com/product.php?PROD_ID=66

Although I have no idea how Intel Atom processors compare to Marvell??? Confused... Also QNAP states explicitly support for PS3 while Thecus just says DLNA compliant without any details. What do you think?

I like QNAP, they have a plain linux you can tinker with.

I have their entry level NAS and although the processing power wouldn't be enough for transcoding, it is more than enough for remuxing and that's all I need. With that, I can play most formats in a Sony TV so I suppose it would be the same for the PS3 (be careful when they say they support PS3, you won't know for sure until you try the formats you need).

I never transfer anything by wire so I can't comment on that point.

Good luck!

I have the WD MyBook Live 3TB and media are streamed to my TV via WD TV Live. Otherwise, I can also access it via app through android and apple devices.

I don't have a PS3 though.

cheers.
