Tsunami risk/Lac Lehman?
"Swiss lake tsunamis are disasters in waiting, warns Geneva University researcher Guy Simpson, co-author of a study into a giant tsunami on Lake Geneva in 563 AD triggered by a rock fall and underwater landslide.

According to new research published in the Nature Geoscience journal, a massive rock fall - probably from the Le Grammont mountain close to where the Rhone flows into lake at its eastern end - caused part of the river delta to collapse and slide into the lake."

Just read the above article and was quite shocked. Baseless fears?

Of course there is always the risk that something similar could happen again...but taking into account there was only one such even in the last 1500 years seems to indicate it is not so frequent, so no real need to worry.

Furthermore, if you take a look at the online supporting material of the article, you see that not all of Geneva was flooded, the water basically just hit parts of the central city facing the lake and Plainpalais.

It's logical, big body of water... but where is there enough volume of material to cause a tsunami? I can't think of anywhere in particular that could be the origin to such an event. It's a rare occurence so it might be another 50,000 years before such a freak accident happens again.

(those figures are guesses).

Charlie, I thikn you'd better start training to get ready for this event. It's gonna be sweet man and it's never to late to learn to surf. Just thikn how cool that would be when everyone is panicing and rioting in the streets and you're just there rippin' it up in style.

Otherwise I suppose we'd better act quick and rid the world of women and gays.

David W...

Since it will clearly be an "extinction level event" (for Geneva anyhow) I'll body surf the wave... and then dash off to my mountain hideout and procreate madly with all the poor terrified honies that are staying at my place (purely for safety reasons of course) ....

Cant wait...

...for if a tsunami did happen, the Genevese would have just over an hour to evacuate their city before its centre was obliterated.

I am astonished that as you have been a member of Glocals since 2005, and presumably still live in Geneva. you spell the lake "Lehman". Perhaps it was just a slip of the fingers, but here in the Haute Savoie, it is definitely "Leman".
