UBS has overdraft? KInd of urgent...
Hi everyone, it's a long story but I am in dire lack of funds due a to temporary cash shortage. Should be ok within about a month but in the meantime was wondering if UBS allows overdraft from a regular checking account. I couldn't find anything on their web site about it. Has anyone tried withdrawing cash or making a payment greater than their available balance?

at first i wasn't allowed, but it seems after a certain amount of time they just added it without telling me! hence i don't know the conditions for getting this, but i did manage to go overdrawn whilst thinking that i had more money than i did since i thought i had no overdraft!

Thanks for the replies so far. I remember seeing in another forum that banks here don't like to advertise overdraft protection but most offer if you ask, but only if you've been a good client. To G___, how much were you overdrawn? Did they charge any fees or interest for that?

they did charge. As julain said, this is CH! They don't even give you change for buses!!!
can't remember how much they charged, and think i didn't go over a thousand overdrawn but again can't remember how much. can you get to the bank and ask them directly? might save you some time by the looks of it!

ok not quite a free lunch, but maybe one less stolen from you ;-)

Apparently you can now get a refund of your overpayments when you buy bus tickets ! Just take them to the TPG office at Cornavin.

Thanks again for the replies. I sent out some payments successfully with UBS (under chf 1000) and the account went into the red, no charges to report for now but I'll keep you posted.

At some point I ended up talking to a UBS customer service rep, this is what she said, in a nutshell:

1. Overdraft is standard for a UBS checking account and eligibility is computed automatically by the system, providing overdraft up to 1000 or 2000 chf.
2. You can apply for (a more dependable) overdraft protection up to 2000 chf if you have a monthly balance of at least 5000

In practice, what she said seems to check out. I was able to go into the red 1000chf and a few weeks later (after depositing money and having a positive balance) I tried to go into the red again and it didn't allow. A few weeks later, it worked. Basically, from what I gather the UBS system will keep allowing you to go into the red so long as you are also making deposits/earning income on a regular basis.

I still haven't had any charges applied for going into the red, which may be one of the very things UBS DOESN'T charge you for :)
