UK vs Swiss taxes for independent

Hello

Does anyone know a tax advisor in Geneva or London who knows about British vs. Swiss taxes for "independents"?

Thanks-

marv

PS: married with 1 kid, Swiss citizen currently living in Geneva and starting my own business as an independent, with a majority of clients in the UK (and some in Switzerland).

Ideally would like to move to London, but am wondering about pros and cons (deductions, tax rate) of staying in Switzerland another year or 2.  I know overall taxes would be higher in the UK, but I've also heard there might be ways around some of it if some income was generated abroad etc. (+ more deductions as an independent in the UK?)

In the UK you will almost certainly have to operate via a Ltd Co. Most of your salary can then be paid as a dividend which avoids NI charges which are quite substantial.

You can deduct anything business related as expenses.

All that assumes that you are outside the IR35 legislation which sounds like it will be the case.

Hi David,

What falls in or outside the IR35 leglisation the UK is really a specialised subject and has big implications for the treatment of your indpendent income there.

There are also significant deductions for those being assigned from abroad. You really need to speak to a management company that handles cross border assignments for independents..

I'll PM you with a contact.

Good luck

Phillip

Do you intend to become resident for tax purposes in the UK? Will you live there more than 90 days per year, on average, for next 5 years?

Do you actually want to live in London or Switzerland?

:-)

Hi Darren -

I actually would rather live in London relatively soon, but depending on the final tax bill(s), might slow down the move as I will also have clients in Switzerland and therefore might not mind being here a few months each year .

The answer to your first question is yes - starting with this year. Why did you ask?

many thanks for your time!
