Unemployment benefit when changing cantons

i just wondered if anyone knew anything about what might happen if I resigned from my permanent contract in Vaud to move to be with my boyfriend in Zurich. I have a B permit and will have been working here for 3 years. if I can't find a new job will I still be entitled to chomage? I have heard I might get penalised and receive nothing for up to 4 months.  Are the rules for unemployment benefit (amount, duration, language lessons etc) the same in every Canton?

Any advice gratefully received! Thanks

yes, normally if you leave your job without another contract within the month, you can be penalized up to 30 work days ( 1.5 months) . at least it used to be that, but may have been extended.....better ask.

Hello Emma,

According to my understanding, in worst case you could be "penalized" up to 6 months - depending on what you do/dont do when you resign.

Start looking for a job before you resign and keep records of it (by which you can demonstrate that you are actively looking for a job). This would count towards giving you a lower "penalty period".

Is Vaud (or where you live) more than 2 hours commute (4 hours back and forth) away from Zurich? If so, you are fine. If the commute is within the 2 hours range one way, they think that is an acceptable daily commute and therefore they do not accept it as a reason to resign. You can still resign if you want, but then they will "penalize" you - giving you a higher "penalty period"

According to my understanding you would get 70% of your salary.

Check all these and more of "to do" and "not do". They are very important when it comes to evaluating your case and giving you the "penalty period".

Thanks so much Katalin.

My communte would indeed be more than 2 hours.

I went to the ORP office in Vevey today and they said that it would be up to Zurich to decide what I get.  They said it would be 70% but I may get penalised for resigning but like Roger said it would be a maximum of 30 days.  I was given forms to record my job applications.  They also said I could ring any Caisse de Chomage and speak to someone in English. Scarily, they said I might get nothing but as I've been working for 3 years I should be entitled to it.   As I left, she just said "It's complicated" !

Fingers crossed I find a job!

(Roger, have you finished that Chomage board game yet?!)

my advice would be to keep your job for the moment in vevey and spend the weekends in zurich.

in the meantime, you can be on the lookout for jobs in zurich. it's always easier to find a new job when you are not unemployed and feeling desperate.
