Valentine's Day Poetry Competition - by YouMeCo
Yes, as tradition would normally have it, Glocals would have startd the Valentine's Day Poetry competition by now. but perhaps Site Admin is workin hard to get the new and improved site that he's too busy to start this thread going.

So, I've now decided to start my own competition.  The 5 top poems that impress me shall be invited to dinner at my place.  Timing and date to be determined later.

So let thy hearts and words of love start flowing. (just reply to this thread)

I have a poem that I want to share with you. I speak more fluently French than English.

Sorry for those who don't understand French. ;)

J´aurais aimer dessiner tes lèvres sensuelles

Jusqu’où mes rêves vont-ils me persécuter

Pardonne à mon coeur amoureux;
Mais je paierai de ma souffrance
Ces gestes maladroits, ces élans impétueux
Pourrais je un jour vaincre ton silence ...

LOVE IS HARD TO FIND

Love is the toughest thing in the world to find

You can only do it if you keep an open mind

You need an open mind for its arrival to be recognized

In many cases it is not you who finds love because sometimes it is disguised

It can be disguised in the form of a friendship

Even one that you dearly worship

Perhaps it will be perceived as a strong relationship

One that has lasted and might even be an unrecognized partnership

If love does find you you need to know what to do with it

Hopefully this is something you were hoping for and can deal with it

The real risk is that you let it pass you by and not grab the ring

Continuing on the merry-go-round of life as it continues its circling

If you always wait for what you hope will be a better prospect

There is the possibility you will eventually find you are upset

Don’t let this happen to you

Open your heart and your eyes and see what is in view

yea~h! Thanks Laureen :)

Andrei!  If only this judge could judge in Russian, then I the judge could judge you a winner. But since I can't, you'd only impress the Russian ladies on glocals.

Hint hint: Viisuals, photos, videos will receive higher points! :satisfied:

(phew:rolleyes:... was starting to get worried about this thread.....)

Here is the translation:

Prisoner of your loving look

Prisoner of your loving look

I wanted to make my eyes talk

Reflection of my heart in your respect

Dropping a tear in heaven.

If an admission is difficult to say

It’s maybe as a confused spirit

How to tell you this sunshine, great mystery

That I wanted to make you share.

Your smile  expresses kindness

I would love to draw your sensual lips

From my fingers to read your tenderness

It should be good to hide under your wings.

Memory, I need to close my eyes

So that the scent of your hair get me drunk

Forgive me this risky kiss

But an impetuous heart shouts his joy of living.

I see my face buried in your curly hair

Your  shy and troubled body

Defeated by this chance and your bright beauty

I dream of a sweet romance or a love torride.

Yes, weak and led by the movements of my heart

I am one of those who are willing to raise a temple to love

Accept to be my muse, my goddess and my happiness

What can I do to have you forever.

And I dream again and again of you

It should be good to sleep on your delicate shoulder

Hold your hand or hug you

But where do I go in order not to offend you, my little girl.

Nevertheless no right to your respect and already prisoner

I am afraid of the moment when you will not be there

How far will my dreams persecute me

If I dare, I ask you to stay close to me.

It hurts me to know you are elsewhere

Happy and carefree without me

May it possible that you remain indifferent to my unfortunate love

Why does love handle us roughly  like that.

I have my thoughts and then my dreams

And if this is all what you leave me

Do know that they are for me the whole sap

Which animates me and makes my tenderness live.

And on this deserted beach I will draw

These few wonderful  letters

Fleeting marks of a passionate love

One day shadow, you are so silent.

Desesperated in front of  this impossible love

I implore gods for help

Gods of ancient Egypt, do not stay insensible

Amon Ra, Isis love goddess.

Receive for offering these letters

Protect this one, my sweet lunacy

Fragile soul, tender and happy to be

Help me to seduce this beloved heart.

Forgive my in love heart

But I will pay from my suffering

These clumsy gestures, these impetuous rushes

Could I overcome some day your silence ...

2nd poem

THE SPARK OF LOVE

The spark of love will strike from above like lightning

But not necessarily so fast that you feel your heart quickening

Yes there is possibly such a thing as love at first sight

It can hit sometimes with all its might

The problem is that it isn’t always right

What you know about your partner is only by sight

To truly fall in love and have it grow

You will need to spend time at each other’s elbow

For love to last you need to be at ease with each one’s expectations

This will require a good deal of interactions

To have a true love will also require a lot of communication

Perhaps then a real spark can be in your mind’s anticipation

If you go, who shall caress me like so
Who shall hear me at the end of the day
Who shall comfort and sooth
Only you know

And if you go
Who shall I attend by the window
In a festival dress, for him to arrive
To hold me like so
Like you do when you come

When you go
Out to the sun I shall run
In the golden field, morning and evening
The moon shall light up my face
that dreams all day only of you
And when you come you shall
carry me in your arms
From field to river
Wash my face and tell me words
as only you know

I love poetry, and i admire folks who are able to express their feelings with words.

@Isa, I agree about poetry being the antidote for broken hearts and hurt souls. But don't you think it also opens old wounds? or adds to the sadness that one may going through? I typically wouldn't run to poetry when I'm feeling upset after a fallout from a relationship. Maybe it could be a new approach I take..hm....

@Grumpa, thank you for inspirations. It sure helps to mend those recovering from a broken heart.

@Gentlesmile, how fitting your name is to the poet inside you.  J'adore le visual!

@Ehsaan, I love this artist in the link you provided. I've been listening to it after your earlier post. indeed, if there was an ethopian amongst us, would be nice what is being said.  Love the poem as well.

Hope to hear more voices out there.  Competion ends midnight of February 14.

Here's my 3rd and last poem--just in time for the big day :)

VALENTINE’S DAY 2009

Valentine’s Day has become too commercial

Perhaps it has even become detrimental

Detrimental because you feel obligated to do something

And this even if you don’t have the inclination or feeling

This is only one day to remember someone you love

In reality, if you are in love, you shouldn’t have to have a shove

A shove to send a card, a gift or a poem to say I love you

That is something that should come naturally and be true

And more importantly it should not be something you feel forced to do

Rather a natural impulse you desire to express every day

Love should not feel like an obligation

It must be an expression of one’s true emotion

Sometimes it is difficult because the one you love may be far away

Making you feel sad while the world celebrates this special day

But never mind because if your love is deep and true

Distance alone will not make you blue

You will have the thought in mind and with today’s modern communication

One can reach out and virtually touch your love and share satisfaction

The text you are quoting:

Making you feel sad while the world celebrates this special day

But never mind because if your love is deep and true

Distance alone will not make you blue

You will have the thought in mind and with today’s modern communication

One can reach out and virtually touch your love and share satisfaction

Barry, your poems are full of wisdom.

A friend a mine sent me this short movie link. I enjoyed alot. :)

The pictures are beautiful and the music is melancholic. It touched me :crying:

The Dash Between the Years

In July 2006, a short 3-minute movie was launched on the Internet called The Dash.  Since then, over 40 million people from around the world have watched it; and over 20,000 a day continue to watch it as a result of people passing it along.

The movie has been more successful than we could have ever imagined.  More importantly, however, it has inspired many, many people to reflect on their lives and ask that all important question, 'Are my  priorities where they should be?'

Do You Know?

Do you know

How the rivers flow

Do you Know

The moon's bright white glow

Do you know

Why pink asked if you might like to go to the show

Do you know

Why sunshine will lift you up and move your problems down below

Do you know

What makes the green grass grow

Do you know

The beautiful music of the cello

Do you know

When to walk up and say hello

Do you know

Why a woman causes a man to bellow

Do you know

Why we have four small digits and a big toe

Do you know

The right road to follow

Do you know

Who is a jolly good fellow

Do you know

How to tell someone to get out and go

Do you know

Not to dive in pools that are shallow

Do you know

What makes one deserve a halo

Do you know

When you yell at a mountain you can hear your voice in echo

Do you know

Down fillings make the most comfortable pillow

Do you know

Money and bread are both made of dough

Do you know

No matter how bad it gets you should always look forward to tomorrow

Do you know

Why people in Amsterdam are so mellow

Do you know

Why when Santa laughs he chortles ho ho ho

Do you know

A popular toy before video games was the yo-yo

Do you know

A bouncing toy name pogo

Do you know

Your life will be fuller if you take it slow

Do you know

Lennon's wife has a first name of Yoko

Do you know

That song "rehab" with the line that ends no no no

Do you know

Why Lola drank champagne down in old Soho

Do you know

Who associated the word average with a guy named Joe

Do you know

When it all ends where you will go

Do you know

If you know where to go to say it ain't so

Do you know

That Valentines Day celebrated with chocolates and jewelry is better than a day explained later with words like blow by blow.

Happy Valentines Day

Newtons Laws Redefined - When Newton was in Romantic Mood

Universal law:

"Love can neither be created nor be destroyed; only it can transfer from one girlfriend to another girlfriend with some loss of money ".

First law:

"a boy in love with a girl, continue to be in love with her and a girlin love with a boy, continue to be in love with him, until or unlessany external agent (brother or father of the gal) comes into play andbreak the legs of the boy."

Second law:

"the rate of change of intensity of love of a girl towards a boy isdirectly proportional to the instantaneous bank balance of the boy andthe direction of this love is same to as increment or decrement of thebank balance."

Third law:

"the force applied while proposing a girl by a boy is equal and opposite to the force applied by the girl while using her sandals."

to you on valentines

When you are near,

my hands shake,

I have butterflies and

the words I use fumble out of my mouth

that is true on every day but this one

On Valentines day conventions allow me to be me,

and I have a base to show you the things

as I wish to everyday,

but tomorrow will come and the old me will return

and I will stumble over myself, my heart and you

for another year.

love

awww... this is all so touching and i'm really glad i started this thread.

Sorry for my silence, but as the Glocal junkette queen that I am, I was out partying this weekend with the Zurich folks, first skiing in the blizzard conditions in the Zurich alpine mountains and nearly wiping out into the ravines, followed by a VIP Valentinstag party at the "Hard One". The city of Zurich rocks! but I'm now back in the petite ville of Geneve and just read all the lovely poems.

Thanks to everyone who posted thy sweet tender words, videos links, or even to tell me how bad a poet you are, but still have the courage to post on the Forum. :)  I've heard many people say they don't subscribe to Valentine's Day either because of it's commercial values, or because it should not be one day that we express our love for someone, but I think it helps as a reminder to ourselves that we should be thankful for our loved ones.  We get consumed in our day to day goings and stresses of modern day lives, so I still enjoy Valentine's Day at any age, and whether if I'm single or with someone.

@Tony: I really can relate to this from the very first crush that i had many moons ago in elementary that lasted throughout highschool on one person.  Many a friends knew i liked this one boy (even voted "Nicest Guy" in HS) for the longest time, but in all those years growing up, I never got to tell him how I really felt.  This poem reminds me of that time when I finally got the courage to tell him how I really felt about him growing up yrs later at our highschool reunion.

@Saurab: I chuckle at the Universal law to the Second Law, but I'm a bit puzzled by the punch line of the 3rd law

@Todd: there's a lot that I didn't know... and I was hoping for a sweeter, tender ending after such a nice climax towards the ending

I will announce my Valentine finalist...... shortly :Wow:

ok... i know i know valentine's like so far in the past now, but since i only have so few local folks who posted, I select those poems written from the heart. Sorry Ehsaan & Isa, I hope to catch up with you a different time!

so Gentlesmile, Grumpa, TonyT, WordTodd (why's there no chicken photo of you??), I propose a day for all to join me for a gathering as promised at mine, but to come up with a common day may be problematic, in which case i pick a day that meets the majority of people's schedule, plus i have limited weekends free :(

I will send some possible dates to your inbox, and look forward to meeting you soon.

Hi Youmeco,

that is great and really nice but you do not have to do anything like that. I like to write and share so no invitations or anything like that is needed. I see on this site that you work hard and organize a lot of nice events, I appreciate your efforts but no effort is needed here in my opinion.

It was sad that there was not many entries this year but it was nice to read what came in. Last year after the poetry contest, we started a poetry group that was about 12 members who meet for a few months and it was fun. If anyone is interested in that I can start that up again. It was funny because only one member who wrote a poem actually joined the group and it was mostly made up of people who read the entries. Great fun.

YouMeCo--I agree with TonyT you don't need to reward us with anything-  You have enough on your plate what with moving and everything else you do.

It was really nice of you to set up this thread for those of us who like to show our poems to others and the satisfaction is in doing that and not whether we get a reward or not.

Barry :)

Hi

it was nice reading poems and although this year there was not a lot of entrants. ;)

We have rarely the opportunity to express our feelings for those we love. Thanks to this thread, we did it with tender words.

I agree with you guys. The reward is in sharing poems with the others and people enjoy poetry. :P

YouMeCo, I can come at your last birthday drinks and I will have the pleasure to meet all of you "in live". The fact that you are leaving us, makes me sad. :crying:

:P no worries, I'll still be on the forum and posting things on here so I'll be around in spirit. :P just not physically around to organize & attend parties, but.... once the new and improved system goes up and running, you just might see New York up and live!

would be great to have live feeds of parties going on in different parts of the world should we be able to incorporate skype or some live webcam feature into the new site.
