Visit to the cantonal office before changing a canton

I was wondering what documents I need when I visit the cantonal office to inform them that I'm moving to a different canton? What will happend to my permit? Did anyone go through it?

Thank you -Marz

Hi there,

I changed canton recently. Moved from Ticino to Geneva. I had to go to the cantonal office in Lugano to announce my departure. Basically it was a standard form, filled in usual details, such as the exact date of departure and the new postal address.

In Geneva, I had to go with a copy of the departure letter from Lugano, to the cantonal office. They took my old permit, and in two and a half months, sent me a new one issued in Geneva.

By the way, it comes handy to obtain a "no objection" certificate from the Canton you intend to leave. In my case, upon arrival in Geneva, I was asked for that attestation whenever I applied for an apartment. This certifiate basically lets them know that you don't have any un-returned debts or any kind of financial liability outstanding.

I hope I have been able to help you! Good luck :)

Yes, that's very helpful. Thanks!

It's a bit worrying that they will take away my permit for sometime. Does it mean I won't be able to look for a job?
