WARNING-Don't cross Plainpalais at night alone now!!!
Hi!

I just went home crossing Plainpalais as usual... I have never been scared as it is an open place and you can see people approaching, even at the East side close to the parking entrance the drug dealers normally stick to the little kiosk there and leave you alone.

At the moment the whole area is full of circus stuff and only relatively narrow corridors lead you across and you cannot see across the field. It seems that some of the drugdealers or junkies :alien:take advantage of that.

Tonight, right before I reached the street I heard a strange noise, looked right and saw two guys fighting...it was very dark and then I realised that the one guy was robbing this other guy who I figured out later (first thought drunk) seemed to be mute or mentally disabled (?)... I have to admit my first impulse of going there and asking the guy to stop was overpowered by fear as I was not sure if he had a knife and I had nothing but my high heels and a second guy seemed to be waiting for him ... so I just tried to reach the street and hoped for some cars to pass... Of course, today, Geneva was completely empty at 4:30 am... Only one car was there and the driver was shouting something at the crook who left finally with his prey.

Honestly, I feel really ashamed :angry:that I didn't try to help the poor guy :crying:, but I haven't been scared like that for years as it was deadly silent everywhere and all happened so quickly ... just thought, get out of the dark there!!

Definitely, as long as the circus is there I will not cross Plainpalais at night anymore on my own...

Wish everyone a good party weekend, though (seems that most people left the city-as I will do tomorrow) ;)

Take care!

BB

Sorry to read stuff like this.

Well, either you shouldn't feel guilty about not doing something or both of us should. I'm a guy and I cannot swear I would have done any better. When the unexpected strikes and you cannot really grasp what are the risks, it's only human to try to reach safety.

I feel for you for having been somehow a collateral victim of this mugging.

The only bright side of the matter is that I'm sure there is a lot of Glocalers who will be more than happy to walk/chat/drive you home after a party when it's really late (although it's somehow stealing a bit of your freedom).

Hi

No worries, I'm not paranoid now (not more than normally - but that's in diff. respects;) ... just wanted to let people know to watch out. I'm a big girl (in every sense :D ) and will go home on my own in future still (sometime nice offers turn out to be not well intended either :hehe: ) ...on top of that, guys get attacked, too, e.g. in front of Mc Donald's @ Rive where at least 50 people were watching... and not to sound like my granny...this shit happens EVERYwhere ...

Have a lovely weekend everyone and hopefully a bit of sun!

Well... Nice.

Glad you got over it. But, I'm not so confident myself now... Maybe you can walk ME home.

Most mobile phones have a built-in camera these days. So if you cannot interfere in any way directly - take pictures/film and send it to the police. There are many court cases where this sort of evidence have condemned the guilty at court.

BB: wow...bad story. But you realloy shouldn't feel guilty. I think most people - unless they're martial art experts or have some sort of death wish - would not step into a mugging at 04h30 at night on a dark alley. Who know what the crook can do: he can run, but he can also stick a knife in you before he runs. Honestly, and tho it might sound not right, I think you really did the right thing.

Casuistik: I'll walk you home anytime you want mate. We can crack jokes together.

Nir! I knew I could count on you!

I know these guys are scum... but still... Considering the quality of our jokes... it wouldn't be fair... even for muggers.

just for those of us who might not remember whilst in the midst of something bad happening...what actually is the telephone number for the Police here in Geneva?

I think I would have to go through all the (il)logical permutations I have in my brain before I stumbled on the right one: 999, 911, ???.   By the time I got there the burglars would have run off into the night.

POLICE URGENCE IS 117. BTW, FILMING OR SNAPPING A PHOTO AT DARK CAN DEMAND SOME LIGHT, SO ...TROUBLE-MAKERS CAN SPOT YOU, TOO, .. UNLESS YOU CAN RUN REALLY NICE. JUST A THOUGHT, MAYBE STILL BETTER TO DO IT RATHER THAN NOT TO DO IT :-)

Well haegar,

1st NOT every mobile has a camera yet,

2nd they are sometimes not the best (& would require light-even my camera wouldn´t have been strong enough),

3rd you would need to go there and put it right into his face (could have hit him with my shoes instead)

4th he could stab you right then ... finishing filming your own death:P

5th (probably not applicable in Switzerland) ...due to data protection rules you would need a signed permission to film

6th films and pics are not always counted as evidence

7th a court case? initiated by whom

8th he would your mobile, too

conclusio... better run than practise this kind of voyeurism

Greets from the Glocals addicted one ;)

"conclusio... better run than practise this kind of voyeurism"

Dear BB008,

It is not that easy anymore to just turn your back and walk away. An increasing number of European countries have past a law on Civil Responsibility (France Yes, CH ?), making it a criminal offence not to engage in one way or another. The least to do is to call the police. And if it is not a case of personal danger at least call for the support of bypassers.
