Happy to inform everyone, that

*OCTOBER Fest Birthday Drinks*  - 16.10  -  by YouMeCo

arranged at DaVinci's is now SMOKE FREE!!! :D

It pays to personally request bar manager to enforce it for the evening.

So anyone evening 'thinking' of lighting up is kindly requested to step outside. Cheers

Moral of the story:

Precise in your activity whether the venue is smoking or non-smoking, then Haeneger doesn't have to get on her high horse!

That's a joke Haeneger, by the way, you look lovely on the horse and I appreciate the warnings, as forewarned is forearmed.

Hi Heagar

I've been following this thread for a while, and I still don't understand it's purpose.

I can understand why people would want to have a list of Non-smoking bars/restaurants, but what is the point of 'Warning' people about activities that are organized in venues that allow smoking?

Are you trying to force activity organizers to only organize activities at smoke free venues?

Are you trying to make sure that people do not join activities in Smoking venues?

Thanks alot for clarifying

Oded

Oded, I think this is a useful thread.  I'll definitely go to events/places I know are non-smoking and avoid the ones that aren't.  So I find this really helpful.  After all, we foreign types can't vote here - the only way we can make our views known is with our economic power - i.e. not spending our hard-earned money in the smoke-pits.

I think this is about supporting non-smoking events rather critising those held in smoking venues, but it's good for organisers to be aware of people's preferences.

Thanks Haegar!

I also feel quite uncomfortable with this thread, and don't like the idea that someone is pointing finger at such and such event for any kind of reason. As Tinkie puts its hard work to organize an event and it should be left to the organizer whether (s)he wants to promote a smoking/non smoking venue. if a participant wants to know, then an e-mail would do just fine.

Hi Oded,

I think that of the same reason that people would like to have a list of smokefree bars/restaurants, people would like to know what indoor activities are smokefree. And it is possible to organise smokefree activities at normally smoking venues. Both YouMeCo and Rasputin have shown this. And there are smokefree venues......

Also, I feel that it is in line with the Glocal philosophy that indoor activities are organised smokefree - all Glocals indoor parties are smokefree. We should not forget that a smoking prohibition in indoor public places was carried by almost 80% at the public referendum in Canton Geneva. That the implementation of the prohibition was temporarily annulled by the Federal Court was due to juridical technicalities, and not due to a misinterpretation of the outcome of the referendum.

Therefore, I feel it is strongly recommendable that indoor activities are smokefree. But it should not be compulsory. However, smokefree or not should be clearly indicated in the add, and by that we could close this topic.

Hi again folks

Heagar - Thanks for the explanation.

I agree that it might be helpful for some people if the Member Activities were marked as smoking or non-smoking, but this is not a function we have at this point, and I don't like the idea of forcing activity organizers to do this.

Some people are really bothered by smoky venues, some by loud music, some by restaurants that serve meat, and some by venues that don't recycle.  I understand that smoke is more extreme because of the passive smoking effects, but, again, I dont like the idea of forcing organizers to indicate smoking or non smoking, and I dont like the idea of 'outing' organizers who choose to organize an activity at a venue that allows smoking.

Maybe a better way would be to congratulate people who organize activities at non-smoking venues, rather than to berate people who organize at 'smoke tollerant' venues?

In any case, despite being a smoker myself, I really hope the 'No Smoking' law is reinstated in Geneva soon, but until it happens, lets try to respect each other, regardless of whether or not we choose to smoke, eat meat, listen to loud music, or any of the other things that some people do and some are opposed to.

Thanks and have a great weekend

Oded

I agree with Oded and the other people above: although I'm really pissed off about having to be exposed to cigarette smoke in bars and cafés again, I find this thread a bit extreme and aggressive. Like Oded suggests, why not turn it around instead and make it a list of events and activities that are organised in smoke free environments?

You can't always choose the location of your activity; if I want to arrange an activity involving seeing a band or going to a festival for example, it's not up to me to decide if that event should be held in a smoke free environment or not. Most likely it would be in a smoky place. And I wouldn't really appreciate if someone went and black listed my event/activity just because of that.

To be clear, organizers cannot force anything to the bar owner. I just asked the people who join W&T not to smoke. If another organizer doesn't do that, I still think it's wrong to point fingers. As a lot of people said here, it's not easy to organize activity, especially deal with the bar owners.

Cheers

I do not find anything extreme or aggressive about this list. If people have their complaints about this thread, they should post it in a different meta-thread. This thread should only be about letting people know which events are smoking or nonsmoking. (The title could be changed to "INFO list of SMOKING and NONSMOKING events).

There is no point in everyone who wants to know messaging the thread starter directly. It would be better if people who organise activities and events could mention the smoking or nonsmoking status in the text, at least for obvious indoor locations like restaurants and bars. Since that's not done, this thread is useful.

i'm a non-smoker and not particularly fond of cigarette smoke, but until it becomes the law again, i'm not going to force people who make the effort of actually showing up to my activity to go outside to smoke if the place is not smoke-free.

last time, all the smokers sat at the same table so as not to bother the non-smokers too much, which i thought was a nice gesture. it didn't mean you couldn't smell the smoke, but i'm not the law and my activity isn't big enough for me to ask the bar to be non-smoking for one night, and if other people in the bar smoke anyway, you're still gonna smell it.

and i'm not only going to accept non-smokers, sorry.

my 2 cents.

Minda, that is your right.  Nobody here has questioned it.  Nor has anybody asked you to only accept non-smokers.  If somebody asked you to only accept non-smokers, the appropriate response would be to politely refuse, preferably in a private email.  This thread is not about that.  This thread is only to *inform* people which events will be held in smoking locations.  I hope this is clear to you.

[/b]This thread is only to *inform* people which events will be held in smoking locations. I hope this is clear to you.[/quote]

This thread has been created and fed by people who feel an urge to inform the world about events that they did not organize because they believe it is their right and their mission, which I find highly questionable and perfectly detestable. As far as I am concerned, I am a grown up, just as everybody else on this site, and if I have a problem with smoke (be it because I smoke or because I don't, that's not the point), I can take care of myself and get in touch with the organizer or the owner of the place. I do not need some sort of anti-smoke evangelist to let me know.

By the way, while I do enjoy a glass of wine or a good pure malt, I do not like people who get drunk (alcohol kills as much as smoke) or those who stink or those who talk loudly... Are you going to advertize these events as well ? Booze free events ? Odor free events ? Noise free events ?
