Tourists to benefit from sales tax exemption

Souvenirs, including watches and jewelry, and other goods purchased by tourists will be exempt from value-added tax starting May 1.

The Federal Department of Finance has accepted a new law outlining the exemption at the request of parliament.

For shoppers living outside of Switzerland, goods for personal use or gifts will be tax-free as long as they are worth at least 300 francs and are carried abroad within 30 days.

To take advantage of the exemption, purchasers must prove they have no property in Switzerland.

Under the new legislation, tourists will no longer need to provide a stamped form at the border.
