WRS: CFF Reinstates Last Minute Tickets For an Extra Ten Francs Instead of Fine

Friday, 28 June, 2013, 16:30

Rail company reinstates 'last minute' tickets

The national railway company has relented following criticism from passengers who don’t have time to buy a ticket before they board the train.

They’ll have the option of buying a “last minute” ticket if they approach a conductor before the train leaves, and if they pay an extra 10 francs.

The move follows controversy over a decision, last December, to introduce a 90-franc fine for anyone without a ticket.

Before that, people were able to simply pay a penalty of 10 francs if they left it until they were on the train to buy a ticket.

What happens if I can't find/see a conductor before I get on the train?

Thanks, R.

I hardly ever see a conductor before getting on a train and if there are only a few seconds before the train leaves and you're running for it, how can you possibly have the time to buy a ticket without missing it.

And supposing you have luggage or a child in a stroller?  Or you're on crutches?  There are umpteen reasons for not being able to buy a ticket and not reporting the fact to a controller before you get on the train.

I don't see why a supplementary payment of 10 or 20 francs (depending on the length of the journey) can't be charged when you buy a ticket on the train.  This would surely cover any admin cost just as efficiently as the practice of fines, which is not only cumbersome but hardly consumer friendly.  But this last is something that CFF has yet to know about.
