Elvis costello is one of the" brave souls " in Britain who are boycotting Israel

by the way

It is very well for him to criticise

All these songs are very nice and Gandi had the philosophy of passive

resistance but then somehow i dont think rockets just stop falling by themselves

yesterday a swiss man told me that every country is responsible for its citizens

therefore switzerland kept peace during ww2 and saved its own citizens

and Israel is trying to do the same

I wonder what these singers would say if someone was throwing rockets

at them and bombing their buses ?

That is what the swiss man asked

I also wonder what is the point of singing for peace in a violent world

when the ones who need to listen to the songs are boycotting the western world ?

You and Marxist have several threads where he pastes articles and you argue against them - do we really need to turn this into another of those threads?

interesting point oded.

personally i like seeing star and marksist talking about these issues. and i appreciate greatly the time and work marksist puts in to supplying us with reading material. but perhaps marksist could just paste the link for the articles and we could all read them off-site? that would allow the posts to retain their snappy and dynamic format without unduly diminishing the vivacity of the debate :o)

Hi Manics.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of arguing through pasting, but my point was that there are several Star vs Marxist threads already going on, so I'd like to keep this thread focused on the original theme Ehsaan started.

David, why dont you change your name to Goliath

sounds better suits you better

boring is a very cynical comment

cynical people have no connection between their heart and minds

Oded,

i love those biblical sandles

let me indulge in some drama

life is after all a bit more dramatic where we come from

and let these pale faced europeans have something to talk about

Wink

between us

i am really tired of israel being scapegoated and i wish i had Marksist

pasting and posting abilities and his sharp mind

but all i have are my feelings and i know my heart is in the right place

and what i say makes sense

the problem is explaining the position to the average europen influenced

by the biased media

the background we must never forget is jews seen as scapegoats

so all of the sudden the jews want this tiny piece of land and dare to fight

like we are supposed to have a calculator and count how many palestinians are killed when we try to stop them from throwing rockets

and then you got these eurpeans who have no clue what war is like

who get a train bombed and then continue to boycott israel

and ignore the fact that jews have contributed and continue to

some important things like facebook, scientific inventions, movies, books

and think we can all move to new york if the palestinians want our land

no i definitly think David R is way off the track

and if i bore you

good

i am not here to please you

as for the forum sticking to the original

that is the beauty you never know where this or other thread ends up

manics, you are a cool guy

open minded and friendly

good to be appreciated

Hi Star,

Sadly, once you start hijacking a thread, I know exactly where it will end up.

I appreciate the fact that you're willing to take the time to try and change people's minds (usualy an almost impossible mission on a forum) but please:

1. As I said above - you and Marxist are already arguing about the same things on several different threads.  Don't highjack every thread on glocals just cause it has some relevant words in the subject line.

2. No

need

to

use

so

many

line

breaks

in

each

oslo agreement :

rabin murdered by extremist

yasar araft: lived like a king starved and stole money from the palestinians

never gave up the idea of a greater palestinie with jerusalem as its capitol

started a movement fatach that placed bombs in market places and buses

and got nobel peace prize

clinton-his wife is now organizing wars on behalf of the USA

obama won nobel peace prize while fighting three or four fronts and now more

Israel wants peace but whatever israel does

it seems cynical people think it is easy to defend a  country against

rockets and bombs

the option is never to give up life or security for peace

At this point I think he is right, 1 topic ok, but Israel is appearing everywhere now on this forum. Glocals main purpose is not to fulfill the needs of the Jews or the Israeli's to promote their thoughts on the conflict. We have to leave space to fellow expats with other interests.

It wouldn't be so irritating if the one used fewer line breaks and the other more.

It wouldn't be so ridiculous if the one could argue with some facts connected to the topic(or even her own points) while the other limited his answers and sources.

Yes, I learned my lesson from one of the previous debates. (As Oded rightly pointed out to me.) Some people cannot or will not carry out a cogent argument or stay on topic.

I don't agree that Glocals' forums should limit political debates. I have noticed, however, that there has been a proliferation of what I would call insipid, happy-clappy-inspirational clips throughout many forums.  Couldn't they be limited somehow? Shouldn't favorite songs of whatever sort be put under the music/books etc. thread?

Meanwhile, I long for every thread to be hijacked by the usual suspects.  At least then some of us would have a laugh...

As to other stuff proliferated by some...its no more relevant , or irrelevant than some of the drivvel I manage to produce on days... from my part I dont read it....i skip it... not everything in life can be solved by a depressing song or video...

Ok heres my take on this thread so far;

Ehsaan like the idea that Rastafarians may hold the key to "world peace".

Marksist is a Hippy caught in Grouchos moustache.

David _L is a defender of the faith, so long as Morrisey is preaching (sorry buddy but he's got to be the most depressing suicidal music artist ever to grace this world).

David -R - a nice guy with the tact of a Bulldozer

Star - Somewhat obsessed by dodgy songs and Israels plight, with a perfectly understandable cangent  sideline of loving Ireland

Translator - clearly a spy.

Thomas NL - a tall Dutchie who pronounces "s" as if its "SH".... say "so shovels Simons shoe"  50 times....

Rich - Throwing hand grenades ramdomly

Oded - A peace keeper that everyone loves but who's commands are as effective as a UN peacekeeping soldiers is in the middle of a Congolese machete fight

... the story continues.......

PETA demands confiscation of giraffes once owned by Jackson
January 11th, 2010 @ 5:20pm
By John Hollenhorst
SALT LAKE CITY -- An animal rights group Monday called on authorities in Northern Arizona to confiscate two giraffes that were once owned by entertainer Michael Jackson. The statement from PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, follows the deaths of two other giraffes in the same compound near Lake Powell.

The two giraffe deaths, one in November and one last week, have triggered serious accusations about the quality of their care. Critics blame abuse and neglect, but the new owners say they suspect foul play.

The giraffes were the centerpiece of a dream for Freddie Hancock and her husband Tommy. They bought four giraffes from Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch and planned a wildlife preserve.

History of the Neverland Ranch giraffes
Freddie and Tommy Hancock, founders of Banjoko Wildlife Preserve, purchased four giraffes from Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch in 2008 during Jackson's legal and financial troubles. The Hancock's intended to build a 185 acre enclosure of natural habitats near Lake Powell to showcase the giraffes and other exotic animals, but the Hancocks have been embroiled in an eviction battle with the city of Page, Ariz. and the project has never gotten underway. Two of the giraffes have since died. Now the Hancocks are studying their legal options after losing a court battle last week that paves the way for eviction by the city of Page, Ariz. Freddie Hancock told KSL on Monday they do intend to move the giraffes, but it's to keep them safe, not because of the quality of their care.

"We've had them for three and a half years, and they are like our children," said Freddie Hancock. "We're just absolutely devastated by the death of these giraffes."

Over the last year, a nasty dispute has erupted, and it's being spread around the world on the Internet. It was triggered by Marc Chandler, who used to work for the Hancocks as their wildlife manager.

He called KSL from South America. "Those two people should be brought up on cruelty charges. I mean, it's disgusting," Chandler said.

He claims the giraffes died from cold weather, abuse and neglect. "Two magnificent animals passed away just for the sake of irresponsibility and somebody that doesn't know what they're doing," Chandler said.

But Freddie Hancock portrays Chandler as a disgruntled ex-employee who was discharged for misconduct.

"I know that there is absolutely no possibility of abuse and neglect," Hancock said. A vet found no clear cause of death, according to Hancock, but she suspects poisoning. "I do have suspicions that there has been some form of foul play, absolutely."

Meanwhile the Michael Jackson-giraffe connection continues to stir his fans. YouTube video features a giraffe made from Michael Jackson newspaper clippings. Another fan in Australia posted a video calling for the two remaining giraffes to be relocated. Tegan Ellis called KSL from the remote town of Wagga Wagga, Australia, and said the "ideal plan is to get them to Africa and rehabilitated and released back into the wild in Michael Jackson's honor."

The city of Page, Ariz., says the Hancocks no longer have a valid lease on city property and will soon have to move the giraffes. Freddie Hancock says the giraffes will be moved for their own protection, but at this point she isn't saying where.

At this point I think he is right, 1 topic ok, but Israel is appearing everywhere now on this forum. Glocals main purpose is not to fulfill the needs of the Jews or the Israeli's to promote their thoughts on the conflict. We have to leave space to fellow expats with other interests.

Star:

There are many good arguments to be made in defense of Israel but you often fail to make them.  Most Muslims want peace just as do most Israelis.  When you generalize and demonize a whole people, you do not help Israel.  This is exactly what many former soldiers and military leaders are saying.  The movie "Waltz with Bashir" is a great one for emphasizing this point.

We all get your point about Israel's right to exist.  Why not avoid inflaming discussions by saying that Palestinians don't teach their children about peace?  Extremist points of view only benefit extremists and prolong the misery on all sides.

And yes, that song is very, very depressing -- because it's lyrics suck and it is sung so abysmally...

In my book that qualifies for a good day and the peacekeeper is almost content.

Marksist and not Marxist (haven't read a single book or essay by the great Jewish thinker).  Haven't posted any articles of parts thereof in this Forum but just responded to the beautiful original video.  As for posting parts of articles, it gives a tast of the article so that one can decide whether to read it in its entirety or not and whether one wishes to agree or disagree - kind of a democratic right to free speach kind of idea mixed with leading horses to water but not being able to make them drink.

My mistake..I always thought this forum was for solicting sex and drugs....

Now I am quite devastated to know that I wasted all this money studying international relations when I had such a pool of experts with a google search engine right at my fingertips.  Perhaps if some of you feel so passionately for these causes you should get jobs in these fields and do something productive.  I don't think your alleviating the plight of whatever the 'victim of the day is" due to the American war machine by complaining about it on the internet and posting day old news.

There is a limit to how much someone wants to read from anyone one person on one topic, every day.. common social manners and customs should tell you when you've worn out your welcome... and you're beating a dead horse.

For some entertainment ;)

What is "news"? Today, a moment ago, day old or years old? If you haven't heard it before then it's 'news' to you (see Howard Zinn's 'People's History'). As for people's googling you needn't read the results and if you do you needn't agree.  You can lead a horse to water.....  glocals is an excellent medium to communicate and exchange ideas.  I wouldn't want to see it change, otherwise I might miss the hilarious Rock take on Bush.  Long live sex, drugs and rock 'n roll!
