Warning - Used Motorcycle Helmets

A number of used motorcycle helmets have appeared in the Classifieds section.

You should never, ever buy and use a second-hand helmet!  It's very dangerous.

Helmet materials degrade over time and even a small impact (e.g. a drop from 1.5 metres) can compress the protective elements of the helmet rendering it ineffective if you are involved in a collision.  There are no visible, external signs of this kind of degradation, so you have no way of knowing if that cheap helmet will save you or kill you.

If you are tempted by a new or "never used" helmet from a private seller you must check the date of manufacture (the date of original purchase is irrelevant) as helmet manufacturers do not recommend using a helmet older than 5 years, even if it hasn't been used.

End of pompous lecture.

Not pompous but public-spirited.

In the same (hopefully not too pompous) spirit, the same rule applies to second-hand ski helmets.

Also, why anyone would ever thinking of renting one is beyond me.  This is even worse, as you're basically renting a second-hand helmet that many people may have had a crash in, without advising the rental shop when they return it.

It happens all the time and rental shops are aware of it, but won't draw your attention to the fact because, as with most "safety" skiing gear, profits are based on fear.

Ditto cycling helmets........

Loved it, but what about this little adornment “worn by … on his one and only truly operational flight without leaving his address”?

(Joking apart, ’tis sad to remember that all those young men also had Mums and Dads and ….).

Why ever buy a used helmet? When you can get a decent one at Jumbo, that has all the quality standards that are recognized in Switzerland, and so what if its not a name brand, at jumbo they are all still made in Italy and good stuff. oh, i dont work their or sell them.

If you need to be fancy go to scooter scoop and they can get you a good helmet for decent/reasonable price. If not just pay full price at honda or Harley D.

There are plenty of new low-price helmets available that meet the minimum safety standards, but you should choose your helmet carefully and spend as much as you can afford.  Even amongst the best brands, such as Arai and Shoei, there are different levels of quality (and, ultimately, safety) according to how much you pay.

Cheap helmets are also heavier and noisier, whcih can lead to fatigue, and less likely to fit well, which is also a safety concern.
