Might I venture that there may be some things preoccupying you.
Regular meditation is a means of quieting the mind and returning to the body for in the body there is only stillness and calm. Again, like all ours minds it can races, and at times it has no dignity keeping us in unrest and so therefore keeping us from rest. If you awake in the night, consider have some relaxing music close at hand and use it with head phones. Better still find a guided meditation - there are many on Youtube - for rest and sleep where you will hear someone's voice man or woman help you find calm. Just acquiesce! There are also many free postcasts if you have an iphone - I find Mary Maddox has a nice voice with appropriate sounds.
Within all of that perhaps before you go to bed it is worth reminding yourself of a few key things that are personal to you and positive and that also puts our short lives into true perspective over and above the fabrications we create for ourselves and let others impose on us. In othere words relativise things: here is a 3 min sample of the style of music that can be useful, but I would encourage you also to consider the quotes on the right as a source of appeasement and solace as and when: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyXKslqkj5I. A lot more exercise, that includes upping the intercourse workout to new levels so that it actually properly makes you tired and in full bliss; likely before that, go for a good evening walk or better a run to get some fresh air, time to think about things and get that blood flowing so that you are tired when you go to bed ;)

It is indeed one of my few pet peeves that the pool closes generally around 21:00 (if lucky) and that they are closed on monday mornings so that one can't do a swim every morning to wake up again...
Running you can do in the middle of the night, might be a bit cold and rainy depending on the time of the year though ;)

Wake up early in the morning evereyday and if you can exercise. Then the following night you automatically get tired after the daily work and chores and ofcourse the intercourse.. ;) and den you get good sleep after that.
As others said maybe a glass of warm milk would help more..and even if not..read a book /watch TV..you will fall asleep..
I tried with booze and it did not help rahter..so wud not suggest.

Generally i do yog nidra its a very good practice . you can find some audio in internet for yog nidra (in English or French ).
Mind unwinding is another very good technique to sleep properly.

Start right from where you are, just on the bed--the last item, and then go back. Then go back by and by, step by step, just to the first experience in the morning when you first became awake. Go back, and remember continuously that you are not getting involved.
For example, in the afternoon someone insulted you. See yourself, the form of yourself, being insulted by someone--but you remain just an observer. Do not get involved; do not get angry again. If you get angry again, then you are identified. Then you have missed the point of meditation. Do not get angry. He is not insulting you, he is insulting the form that was in the afternoon. That form has gone now.

There are typically 2 reasons why I can't sleep: either I am simply not tired or my mind is not done thinking about something.
Not being sleepy means I made a mistake during the day; e.g. I took a nap too late in the day or didn't do anything that required energy later in the day. Either way I just get up, watch some TV and try again an hour later. If that doesn't work I prepare myself for an exhausting next day (unless there's flexibility in the morning).
If my mind is still working I figure out what it is, get a sheet of paper or the right computer application and work until I'm satisfied. Then I may watch a short video to clear my mind before I go to bed.

Hot sex does for men (its a proven fact) but may not for women... hence the snoring beast next to you.

Another trick I tend to use: swap the bed around.
That could mean moving the pillow to the feet part of the bed or moving the bed to a completely different direction/location. But I guess that trick only works for people who do sleep fine in other locations than home too ;)

Read a book you dont like or do all the things you dont like if that doesnt help - count from 1000 backwards to 1 and do it till you sleep if you still cant sleep then count from 10'000 backwards to 99 - and re-start again, before you fall asleep again shout out loud - "I DID IT"

Glass of wine and internet... No use to struggle with insomnia, it will only create more stress (that's not to say one shouldn't find the real reason behind and address that onethrough meditation, sports, diet, medicine, etc etc)....
