What is Celibacy ?

Celibacy can be a choice in life, or a condition imposed by circumstances.

While attending a Marriage Weekend, my wife and I, listened to

the instructor declare; 'It is essential that husbands and wives know the

things that are important to each other.."

He then addressed the men,

'Can you name and describe your wife's favourite flower?'

I leaned over, touched my wife's hand gently, and whispered,

White Wings Self-Raising Flour, isn’t it?

And thus began my life of celibacy....

Thank you Jeffery for posting on this bold subject but not one that I think you have provided any answers to and so I'd like to give this a bit more impetus.  I personally looked into this subject a while back for various reasons and also noted when reading about the Gandhi’s experiments with the truth - http://www.columbia.edu/itc/mealac/pritchett/00litlinks/gandhi/index.html that he practiced what is called Brahmachary http://www.dlshq.org/teachings/brahmacharya.htm (a specific form of celibacy that makes for interesting reading due to it overlapping with wider ideologies).

Notwithstanding, I found many articles on men and woman who adhere to modern day Celibacy (even if it is not always permanent) and I noted things that I had never really thought about before and so that in itself was insightful if not enriching.  I would encourage anyone to look into this out of mere curiosity as it can enable the broadening, if not soften, of usual perspective and on how we live our lives generally, and how we think we should live them - particularly when it comes to close relationships and the challenges they present particularly when one's sexuality is engaged.
