What phone should i get?

Hi :)

As the mobile phone i have now its misbehaving a bit, i need to get a new one. So far the only use i have for my phone is calling and smsing, which is why i have a really old nokia. But since times are changing, im thinking maybe i should get something more advanced. So ideally my phone should have a pretty good camera, maybe an mp3 player with loads of memory (no need to carry an ipod), some games (snake is a big plus!), a way to take notes and an easy to use organiser. It also should be small enough to fit in the back pocket of jeans.

Any suggestions? HTCs and iphones do not interest me so dont suggest them even if you can think a million reasons why i should get one.

Cheers!

Hi Maria,

I'd say Nokia N8 (note the very good cam on this one), but it seems you are looking for something jeans-worthy, so maybe X10 Mini.

N8: Pros: mp3, Spotify, very good cam, HD video, free lifetime navigation. Cons:biggish in a pocket [this could be an icebreaker, though]).

X10 Mini: Pros: Small size, mp3, cam. Cons: No free navigation, if at all.

Cheers, L

Hi Maria,

I agree with Vassilis, I just got myself a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro, and I love it!  Very comfortable, great camera, mp3 player and lots of nice things I am still discovering!   ;-)

cheers, Bjorn

I have an HTC Desire and I'm more than happy with it, excellent functions, for me it's better than an iPhone, especially as I didn't want to follow the crowd with that.

I'm guessing you have Android too? As they are real smart-phones and can multitask, you can often find them slowing down, try to restart the phone occationally or you could install "advanced task killer free" from the market, it closes apps that are running in the background that aren't needed any more.

I hope that helps.

Hi Maria ,

Mobiles in CH are usually locked , but dont let that hold you back :

There is a King of GSM on Rue de Berne / Rue de Lausanne : usually costs 20 - 30 franc to unlock.

Also , Samsung has nice phones too , small / feminine / jeans fitting

I have Galaxy S. The screen is briliant. Samsung processor is about fastest this time. At least iPhone and Galaxy S are closely competing. Android Market is really full of free apps. I have a lot installed and what is important the apps are usefull. It's not like I am just having them installed. I use them! Maybe HTC has a bit more elaborated UI but from my experience (I have HTC and Samsung) its value is going down quickly since the latest Android got really improved UI right in the OS.

Why would you pay 700 chuffs for a phone???  If you're a new customer to Swisscom you'll get the latest Samsung Galaxy for 49 francs on a 29 francs a month contract.  If you're an existing customer you can barter them down from the 279 francs full price to 229 francs.  I did - and I'm crap at bartering!!

Samsung Galaxy isn't the easiest to use - and the 10 million pages of instructions don't help much either.  But then I went from being a dedicated Blackberry person so the whole touchy feeling thing was a bit weird.

In its favour - the camera and video on the Samsung is outstanding - better than my "proper" camera.  You get google maps for free so you can ditch the GPS - and brilliant if you're walking around, lost (maybe that's why guys like it - they don't have to ask directions!!).  You can also access gmail.com 24/7 for free (depending on your tariff) which has also been a life saver (and it links in/updates from your gmail contacts)..

The F/B app is also brilliant and easy to use.

The only other downside of the Galaxy is that the latest version hasn't been out long, so (unlike the iphone) you can't phone your mates, every time you can't work something out.

Plus - there are virtually no accessories to buy in Switzerland (cases etc) you have to order from Samsung direct (unless you can get someone to ship out from the UK).

Other than that - its a pretty cool phone :-)

@Carolyn I want a phone with no contract so the prices im looking at are the sans abonement. I dont like blackberries and you are right about the instructions. I cant be bothered to read them either but i found most of the stuff i wanted in there easy (easier than the HTC at least!)

A google maps app is really important because i can get lost outside of my house. As for acessories, do you need anything else except hands free and maybe a protective case?

Accessories - well, depends if you've got a girl phone or a boy phone - worth checking underneath just in case ;-)  You should be able to get a bluetooth, but protective cases/screen protectors are impossible - the galaxy is irritatingly a couple of mm bigger than the iphone!

Why are you anti-contract?  If you leave the country, it automatically expires, if that's your concern.

I love the goole maps and gmail application - its the best thing ever!

Hey Maria,

I have had samsungs and do not like them. i don't find them easy to navigate. Changing writting language for smss takes about a million click and I have had batteries problems.

If you don't want an iphone - which I find does fit in jeans pockets and is truly marvellous (Just got the iphone 4), then I'd follow nokia recommendations.

A bientôt,

Hi Emilie,

Your past experience with Samsung was based on phones shipped with they propriatary OS. Galaxy S is based on latest Android which totaly defines its new nature. Regarding Nokia.. well, they were always making reliable hardware for phones but they lost the war on the smartphone market. Their Symbian is annoying for many programmers which means there will be less good apps published.
