What type of doctor shall I see? Problem on the toes.

Hi there

I have problem on my toes for years which I would like to see a doctor in France (St. Jullien or Ferney Voiltaire) if possible, as it might need a surgery, the cost will be very high i think in Geneva.

However I have no clue what type of the doctor I should start with to search? Of course if anyone can directly recommend a doctor that would be highly appreciated!

Another question is that what is the right French word to search a doctor who can do a general medcial check-up for me, or needed when I am sick (fever, cough, cold etc.)

Thanks a lot for the advice.

We call *médecin généraliste* the doctor who can do a general check-up.

For the feet, the medecin is a "médecin othopédiste.

You could go to the Outpatients Department of the hospital in St Julian-en-genevois.

Thank you to both Ritchie and Bertrand. With your great help I have luckily found out the right word in French for my problem on the feet, which is called 'Hallux Valgus' which amazingly bothers my life and gets worse and worse.

Does anyone have any experiences in Switzerland to advise the doctor or the hospital, as i know there are some solutions and doctor may use differently to do the surgery. If it is necessary to do the surgery, how much does it cost in Switzerland approximately? Would that be with Specialist only or in a hospital?

Thank you very much for any comments.

Just go to your general practitioner and ask him/her to recommend a colleague who specializes in this type of surgery.  Your doctor will probably also be able to give you an idea of the cost, which may be linked to your insurance coverage.

I have several friends and acquaintances who are very happy to have had the operation, but they all found the convalescence rather wearisome, especially in the winter.  Also, your choice of footwear will be limited for ever more but at least you will be able to walk in comfort again and that, surely, is what really matters.

Best. R.

"Orthopedic surgeon" is probably what you're looking for.  Podiatry as a field of medicine doesn't seem to exist here.

They aren't medical doctors and cannot perform surgery or order/interpret diagnostic images.
