Where can I get my fingerprints taken?

I know this is kind of random, but I need to get my fingerprints taken for a licensing requirement back in the US.

Considering all the drug dealing, prostitution, loitering, and vandalism in Paquis, it should come as no surprise that the police station there is completely useless--they told me they will only fingerprint people that are arrested.

Back in the US often police stations can do this for a small fee like $15 USD.

Anyway, does anyone happen to know of any places that would be able to do this like perhaps university police or private security firms?

I would do this myself but the form requires the officer's signature and I'd rather not make up or forge that.  Also taking fingerprints involves a bit of technique/art so a trained security officer would be ideal.

Thanks!

Maybe go to one of the big police stations (no idea where they are) late on Monday or Tuesday night when the police officers will be bored. Maybe they will do it then. Just an idea :)

I did it few times for my passport...

Why not to use the old/classic ink pad which is also used for old stamps. Press your hand/fingers on the ink pad, and make sure not to do it too much...and then use a clear-white paper and press your finger/hand naturally (again not to press too much other wise the print will get smudged).

Once the finger print has dried out, then scan the paper and you got your digital finger print :)))

If you need a police officer to sign it anyway (which is what I understood from your post), then getting a finger print anywhere other than in the police station won't help you anyway...

Worse case, commit a tiny offense and get arrested for it. Then you'll get your prints taken for free, and you'll have a good story to post on the forums...(-:

Jason, why don't you contact your Consulate or Embassy? I had my fingerprints taken at the US Embassy in Bern but maybe the US Mission in Geneva could also do it?

Jason,

Go to the American consulate in Geneva, their physical address (not mailing address as posted above) is 7, rue François Versonnex. (http://bern.usembassy.gov/service.html) They'll give you the appropriate FBI form and the address of the Geneve police office (I forget their address but it is in Jonction) that will fill out the form. You have to get an appointment there, and they are only open 2-4 pm.

Thanks Catalin and Leonid!  I called the permanent mission of the US using the number Catalin posted and they said they said they only do fingerprints for US government employees.  However they gave me the number of another police office in Jonction which is only open 2-4 p.m. like Leonid mentioned.  They were all booked when I called yesterday but I was able to take care of the fingerprints today!

For any fellow Glocals readers that may also need this info in the future, here are the steps to follow:

1) Call 022-427-7485 to schedule an appointment for "visa empreintes digitales."  They will ask you stuff like what country you need the fingerprints for, if you already have the form(s), and how many sets you need.  Appointments can only be made between 2 and 4 p.m. and they can fill up so call early.  They do not allow walk-ins.

2) On the day of the appointment, go to the Police Cantonale building at Boulevard Carl-Vogt 17-19 (1205, near the Jonction bus stop).  Tell the receptionist that you have an appointment for fingerprints ("visa empreintes digitales").  The receptionist will notify the officer of your arrival and direct you to wait in the waiting area.

3) The officer will meet you in the waiting area and guide you through a maze of offices undergoing construction to the office where they do fingerprints.  There you will need to present your passport, the completed fingerprint form (except for the fingerprints and officer signature and date, of course), and 50 CHF (cash only).

4) Wash your hands in the sink with the soap provided.

5) The officer date stamps the form, takes your fingerprints, and signs the form.  Double-check to make sure the officer signs and dates the form.

6) Wash your hands again in the sink with the soap provided.

7) Receive your completed form with your passport and a receipt.

I dont know where you live but at one point I wanted a South African passport and they wanted fingerprints, I was lucky enough that Cantons Police Station in Liestal did that but they told me that usually then dont do that.

Normally, this service seems to be centrallized with the Cantonal police in each canton. Jason did a good overview.

So the place to start is to call the cantonal police in the canton where you are living. They will give you the details as it pertains to their office.
