Where is the best traditional Swiss food

Hey All,

I have some friends visiting over the next few weekends and I want to take them somewhere to experence "traditional" Switzerland.

Does anyone have any recommendations for places up in the mountains (driving from Lausanne) with great views and good fodue etc. Perferably served by a little pigtailed blonde girl called Heidi (that bit may be Austrian but its close enough) and a milka cow grazing outside with a little bell around its neck.

Thanks,

D.

Luzern (Lucern for francophones) its in my opinion a typical Swiss place to take your guest.  Couple thsi with a visit to Altdorf (William Tell) and you are onto a winner!  There are some excellent eateries there, too.

For traditional Swiss food in Geneva may I suggest Cafe du Soleil in Petit Saconnex.

Swiss Chalet is always good for Fondue, dried meat and Ratlette (my spelling makes it obvious I am not swiss).  Crepes can be found anywhere (but I think that is french)

You really should go there: Restaurant Edelweiss. It is in Geneva, Paquis area.

Yodler performers every nights. Maybe it's better to make a reservation.

Go to Taney about 40 mins from Lausanne.  Up on the right above the power station after Villeneuve.  Think you are still allowed to drive to the village if you have a 4 X 4 otherwise a taxi service or a 40 minute walk.

It is the perfect picture postcard Swiss hamelet (unless you go to the German speaking part).  There are three restaurants but not sure about the quality.  It is mountain food rather than gourmet town food.

Hmm, Edelweiss? please read resto-rang's reviews before: http://resto-rang.ch/info.cfm?canton=ge&restono=51&cyear=2011#Clients

Café du soleil: decent fondue, great if you want to be surrounded by loud expats.

If you want to stay in Geneva and have fondue: Le Gruyerien is a good place.

Out of Geneva, why not try Gruyere: not really the mountains, but stunning views, the Gyger museum, and at least one very good fondue place : les Remparts. Quite a few (Japanese) tourists, but they add to the charm, I believe ;)

This said, there's so much more than fondue to Switzerland... ;)

Ive been to Edelweiss and love it :) Its the closest you get to what foreigners think is Switzerland in Geneva. Ok is a bit touristy but thats what you want right? And the food is very good. Ive also been to cafe du soleil and its so not worth it. Unless you want to be packed in a room with almost no space to move to eat some not so great fondue.

Anw as you can see we have different options here. Why dont you organise an activity in both of those places and you can check them out yourself. Im in for the Edelweiss part. As for the cafe du soleil i will love to come but i will be washing my hair that day :P

Also Le Chalet Chateau d'Oex - they make cheese there in front of you at lunchtime.  touristy and with very strange opening hours (closed Friday evening) opens late for breakfast in the morning.  Not used much by locals

my favourite Swiss restaurant is Le Gruyerien in Chene-Bougerie. Very nice chalet-like interiors, friendly staff (very rare in Geneva), the fondue is the best I've ever had and they have a home-made tarte tatin to die for.

Le Gruyerien in Chêne-Bougeries (GVA) is a very traditionnal restaurant. They are specialized in fondue and there is a mini chalet in the restaurant that serves as kitchen.

A litlle gem of a restaurant serving Swiss food (and I don't like sharing my hidden gems) is La Table a Raclette.  Albeit in Saint Julien in France, this place proper rocks and outplerforms all of the establishments mentioned above.

Try it for yourself and the even serve "green" beer.  Outstanding!

Totally agree with just_me and Federica, Le Gruyerien is the best fondue in town! Even in Gruyer it wasn't so tasty.

ahm, I know that Chalet Suisse at Plainpalais is quite popular, but two friends of mine were poisoned there... I've never, maybe it depends on sensitivity of your stomach, but...

If you want a Heidi waitress, you'd better go to swissgerman part. Best fondue is @ Gruyérien or La Bergerie du Gruyérien, same owner !

I certainly wouldn't recommend the 'Chalet Suisse' with its fake food and indifferent service.  Stay clear!

Good but somewhat pricey for small portions and snooty service.

A tourist trap, in my view.

Probably everybody knows, but in case somebody doesn't, a nice place to have fondue in the evening is Bains des Paquis. They don't serve it during the summer time, but maybe they will do on the 1st of August.

Their fondue is made with champagne or ersatz, and is delicious, "light"(!!!), and a good value.

An other place that a friend of mine recommended me is "Chez le docteur" in Laconnex. Didn't try it yet, but surely will. They do serve fondue all the time.

Good luck with your choice Dominic!

I agree with Swiss Chalet, though the service there has gotten worse the last year or so.
