Which Phone (Iphone?) and Service Plan is Best for Geneva?

Hello--

I will soon be moving to Geneva from the United States and would appreciate your guidance on which phone device and service to get.

In terms of device itself is there any other smartphone that is a genuine competitor with the Iphone in Switzerland, in terms of ease of browsing the internet and access to apps?  Are there any other phones that offer GPS?  How important is it to get a 4G versus a 3G device?

In terms of service, which service plan is cheapest for moderate internet browsing/ wireless connectivity?  How about for foreign travel/roaming in France, Poland and elsewhere in the EU?  For the foreign component, can I simply get a different "sim card" for those countries to avoid roaming charges?

Thanks for your advice!

I would suggest an iphone 4 or Sony Erricson Xperia X10...

as for the plan, I dont know how much usage you would have..

I pay 120 CHF per month for an ALL FREE Orange plan..

This includes
1) UNLIMITED FREE calls within Switzerland, Europe and North America.
2) UNLIMITED FREE SMS, all over the world
3) UNLIMITED Data.

Hope this will be helpful.

Thanks, Ehsaan

Ehsaan--

Thank you very much for your advice regarding choice of phone and phone service. Do you have any thoughts regarding the Android phone?

Also, when you say unlimited free calls within CH, Europe and North America with the ALL FREE orange plan, does that include when you are roaming? If not, what is the best way to save on roaming costs? To get a different sim cards for different European countries?

Greg

Hi Gregory,

I would suggest you to get an iPhone .   Hope this link  Glocals  will help you to choose network .  Do you want to buy an unlocked phone or a locked one ?Note: Unlocked iPhones are too expensive . Locked phone cost is low when compared to an unlocked phone .  If you buy a locked phone, unlock it by using Remote unlocking method. You can get it from any of the online service providers like  Superunlockcodes.com   to unlock it .

Not anymore true. For iphones with swisscom they can now be un-locked for subscription customers. (Android phones are unlocked with swisscom).

I would NOT get an iPhone on any sort of contract..

It's 99.236% sure that Apple will release a new version, 5s in August or September.. Maybe as late as October.. So your nice new handset will immediately be old :)  I'd stick to using existing handset and get a pre pay SIM..

Of course you need to shop around based on what you expect to use but you can get really quite low monthly charges if you have your own handset. For example http://www.lycamobile.ch/en/  you can call USA from 1c per minute and for 13.90chf you get 1gb of data.. This uses the Swiscom network so you are pretty much guaranteed excellent coverage.

Hi Greg,

The Orange plan for 120 a month only covers use within Switzerland. Roaming is not cheap. I have not yet figured out how to roam cheaply, so I'm looking for tips too.
