Who are prone to being more jealous men or women ?

Hey All, a question related to the lovely Maria_'s question on is it possible for men and women to be just friends.

I read all 78 replies, but I have not read a single reply which had the added dimension of one having a partner/husband/wife who is of the jealous type and does not like you having friends with the opposite sex.

So the question - are men or women prone to being more jealous on their partner having friends with the opposite sex?

I think that men are more prone to be jealous because in my personal experience my male friends have always been jealous and have shown it.  I tend to be very independent and perhaps this is the reason... I can be jealous too but only when I feel threatened.  I simply sit my partner down and talk about it and express what in their behaviour is upsetting to me.  I have found that trying to change someone never works and so I have learnt how to adapt.  I am now happily divorced!

I agree with Marina.

On a more personal note, i never had a jealousy problem in all of my relationships. Most of my friends are men as we have more things in common (shopping? Yikes!!). I simply cannot stop having male friends just because my significant other will get jealous. Thats just an inexcusable request and if he makes me choose between him and my male friends then he can get lost.

My attitude(?) is "My friends were here before you and they will be here after you".

I also think that is much safer to be honest when seeing friends of the opposite sex. I mean you have nothing to hide right?

The main thing is that i dont see any reason why i should stop seeing male friends just because i am in a relationship. The same of course applies to him.

But then again im not the jealous type :)

Good question. I am not sure you can say that it is about gender. I am more in-line with Marina. The jealous ones are the ones who have a low opinion of themselves: Strong minded and confident people may suffer jealous thoughts, but they are the ones who will take action and reach a situation that suits their needs.

Jealousy is natural but can be very destructive. Seen it close up and want to avoid it in the future.

Having female friends is something I will not change. My girlfriend also has a lot of male friends - many of them I know have "plans" towards her. But I trust her judgement in managing this aspect of their friendship. Either we are strong in our relationship or not.

I think guys tend to be more jealous types, imagine your new guy friend happens to be good looking, tall, smart, successful and has loads of money. Is your boyfriend going to say, yeah what a nice friend you have you should hang out with him more often, or is he rather going to try to convince you of what a smuck he is. I think guys like to feel important around their girlfriend and they don't want anyone  getting in on their territory. A girl will not usually act like that even if the girlfriend is beautiful, smart and wealthy we will probably admire and compliment her. That's only my opinion. Good luck!

Well i think it all depends on the character. Some people are born to be jelouse and guess what if you look deeper you will find that it is inhereted. Probably someone in the family is sharing the same. Others are born less jelous. So it has nothing to do with male or female, it has nothing to do with self esteem.

Well that is my own openion.

the funny thing is most of the times, the guys cheats with the girl's best friend/closest friend and viceversa, lol!

I think it's fine with the partner to be a little bit jealous of their better half having a friend of the opposite sex. Even inquisitive, but that's as far as it should go - if we accept that friendship does not always exclude some level of sexual attraction.

I believe that jealousy in small doses has several benefits: shows that there is interest/chemistry in their partener and keeps an eye on potential dangers :). better than taking things for granted!
