Some of the reasons that come to mind (and the reason why I still live in Geneva) – bear in mind that I love Nyon and work there …
- Because most expats don’t have many friends when they move here, so living in a quiet but not central and not very lively little village might not be the preferred choice to re-create ones social circle from scratch
- Because not everyone has a car or likes to drive after going out in the evening and public transportation is amazing within the city (and for emergency cases taxis are almost affordable)
- Because Geneva is so small that unlike some other cities you can get the international environment without the 30-40mints or 1h commute in morning traffic to work. And people gets spoiled. So while commuting for 45mints might be perfectly normal in Paris, once you realize how nice and close everything is in Geneva, you might want to live somewhere not more then 20mits from work (yes I know, spoilt expat !!!) L
- Because when you don’t speak the local language is nice to live somewhere where there’s plenty of expats and people in the shop are used to speak English (I know that in Nyon the situation is the same, but nevertheless, it’s a small town and I think most expats will assume that living there without speaking 1 word of French might not be the easiest)
- Did I say already because of not wanting to drive? If I’d have to get the car everytime I want to go for a impromptu drink after work with my friends … I doubt I’ll go out very often (I already don’t go out as much as before since I started working in Nyon and commute back with the train ….)
On the other end I think that once you speak French, know the local culture a bit more, and have enough money to pay a taxi back to Rolle on Saturday evenings if you happen to not be able to drive … or have enough friends in Geneva where you can crash … moving out of town is really the best option J
Hope this answer at least part of your curiosity

not that I am aware of, thou it might depend on your country of origin? In theory you should reside in the canton where you work when you have a permit B, to avoid people working in Geneva claiming to live in Bern or Zug for tax reasons, BUT if it's a neighbouring canton and it's considered a reasonable commute (or you have family reasons to want to live say in bern while living in Geneva) .. then you can get your permit from wherever canton (at least if you are an EU national).
Someone correct me if I am wrong.

True, on the other hand if you choose to live (have your residence) let's say in Zug - for tax reasone while working in Geneva and subrent or stay in hotels or something ... you might have some problems with the cantonal office, so that's why they may ask where is your job based before issuing the B permit in a certain canton.

Agree with all the reasons stated as to why i wouldn't live outside Geneva...but to answer the question on the permit....
You can live anywhere in Geneva/vaud when you arrive here, but as far as I can remember, if you arrive in CH and settle in one canton, ie. VD, and 2 years later, you decide to move to the canton of GE...the accumulated years on your B ermit towards your C permit get scrapped and you start all over (this is so for any living address switch for any cantons in CH).
having said this, it is ...(any switch of cantons is like this...whether it's from ZH to GE, from what I understood).... so it is wisest to first establish where you want to live (regardless of where you work) so that the accumulated years one needs to get a B permit transferred to a C permit are taken into account.
Hope this helps,
cheers

For me door to door i can get from home to office near the airport in 40 mins which is nothing compared to what i had to do when i was in the UK
I admit for ladies its safety first but places like Gland are perfectly safe
