Why is locking the door in France and Switzerland so complicated??

In Finland you need a key only to open the door from outside. You open the door from inside just by turning a knob and once you close the door, it automatically locks. Simple, huh? SmileSo why do I have to close the door from inside or outside with a key here in France? If I close it from inside with a key and leave the key in the lock, other family members cannot get in with a key. If I don't leave the key in the lock, I will choke to death in case of a fire, as I will not be able to locate the key to open the damn door.Frown

If you have a front door with glass sections, it's actually safer not to have one of those interior knobs since anyone could quickly break the window part of the door to unlock it thanks to the knob...

Any locksmith will put on a knob type lock for the right price...or simply a hook with your key next to the door might to the trick! Wink

and you should never leave your key in the door if you have glass panel in it.
