Winter tires or all-season

Hi all:

Does anyone have any ideas about where the best prices are for winter tires. Also, I've heard 4-season tires are available at some places. Any recommendations, etc? I've just returned from a long vacation and I *need* to get these summer tires off. It is scary driving around in them. So ASAP help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Euromaster is pretty cheap. (Well by Swiss standards, so about double what I used to pay in the UK.) There is a branch at Vich and Lausanne, and I expect in Geneva somewhere too. I really don't know if you have to make an appointment.
I've heard of  All Season Tytres in other countries, but am virtually certain they are not legal here in the winter. You really need to get your winter tyres. Apart from being a bit "scary", if you crash in your summer tyres your insurance will not pay up.

Also it is totally irresponsible of you to be even thinking of driving your car in these conditions with summer tyres. Imagine if you caused an accident and injured someone. A prison sentance would be the least you'd deserve.

Have a nic e weekend

Good god, I was looking for information and some pointers not moral grandstanding and a condescending lecture. Thanks for the info Bruce, but obviously I realize the implications of not driving with winter tires....hence the request for information on here in the first place, not just because it's a little scary. Really!!

I don't often get annoyed with people, but I do get annoyed with extreme stupidity, especially if coupled with rudeness and arrogance.

You say above that:" Obviously I realize the implications of not driving with winter tyres"

Obviously you don't; otherwise you would not be doing it, breaking the law, putting peoples  lives at risk, and then owning up to it on a public forum.
As Homer is fond of saying...."DOH"

You are supposed to change your tyres by November 15th. I notice you have been here for 3 1/2 years so I would assume you might possibly be aware of this fact.

Try not to crash on the way to the tyre centreSmile

Well, if you're annoyed with rudeness, arrogance and extreme stupdity then you must really hate looking in the mirror everyday. Damn! How annoying for you.

Of course, not knowing me at all, and on the basis of my glocals profile you know exactly how long I've been here. You might add clairvoyance to your list then.

It couldn't be, that I didn't own a car during the three years, or that I had planned to be in Geneva, had joined glocals, but only arrived recently, or that I spent winters away from Geneva? Or really any number of reasons.

You could have said what you'd wanted to (even if you were wrong about your assumptions) in a *not* typical condescending white male manner but then you wouldn't have been able to add pompous know-it-all to your expanding list.

I've asked for advice before (on glocals and elsewhere) on various topics and most people respond in a helpful, genial manner....even sometimes in a slightly caustic one. But you're the first who really ticked me off. On that account at least, we're quits.

Regardless, I have my tires which is great...if for nothing else than the fact that I won't need to be checking in on this forum for a while, thank god.

you have basically owned up to something that is as morally reprehensible and physically dangerous as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, without any apology or obvious sign of remorse, or even acceptance of the error of your ways; and all you can do is reach for the book of tired old cliches...

I do know the number of a cheap taxi firm if you are interested....

Adding rudeness and arrogance to a post that obviously deviated from its original purpose to moral grounds I will not travel lacking experience in the field, I just wanted to underline two elements that may help Jawahara.

1/ it is not illegal in Switzerland to drive all winter with summer tyres (which is not the case in Germany for instance), but you will become liable in case of accident or any kind of problem you may cause to the normal functioning of traffic. I suppose you read French so this link may prove helpful as it will remind you of all the elements to become compliant in this field: http://www.tcs.ch/main/fr/home/auto_moto/tests/reifen/faq.html

2/ this article http://www.tdg.ch/geneve/actu/pneus-neige-garagistes-submerges-2008-10-29 although one year old highlights the fact that taking an appointment may prove useful to mount your tyres during the november - December period or snowy peaks in Genneva, nevertheless using French outlets (for instance in Annemasse) of the various speedy, euromaster, midas, feu vert etc. that may equip your car could prove witty (cheaper and less busy). Just give them a call prior to getting there to check they have your tyre reference. The French website where you will find their phone number is voila.fr

Of course to be totally compliant wait for the roads to be dry and the sun to shine. Wink

Cheers.

Hi Robi,

I am glad to have cheered you up on such a cold winter's day. I must remember to remove my tongue from my cheek today.

I get my tyres changed at Centre Auto Dubler in Nyon and last time they charged me 72 francs( yes you are reading that correctly) and also washed my car too......

Wow Bruce you've definately intergrated into the Swiss culture, you even sound Swiss. I expect you even walk around Geneva shouting at people who drop litter, take photos with your mobile phone and send it to the police department when people commit driving offences.

Robi,

sorry you got the news too late,,, still there is always next springSmile

Yeah, there'salways some joker popping up on these forums who think they are as funny as George Burns, when they are actually about as funny as George Bush.

I remember when my friend had his leg broken a couple of winters ago when a guy on summer tyres skidded into him. Luckily my Swiss side came out, so I called the Ambulance as well as the Police........

Hi Jawahara,

I'm using "Hankook Optimo 4S". They are 4-season tyres, have the snowflake and the M+S (mud + snow) symbols and are therefore certified winter tyres. They have a good grip on dry, wet and snowy streets, are fuel saving and according to tests from www.autobild.de the best 4-season tyres out there along one tyre from goodyear:

http://www.autobild.de/artikel/test-ganzjahresreifen-195_65-r15_786047.html

I can recommend them.

best,

H.

Well it was supposed to be stereotypical satire, and I didn't ask your opinion so I'm not bothered whether you like it or not, and in some aspects it is true, as I know some swiss who do just that!

But thanks anyway for the info

@Brucelawson, had to google George Burns, can't say I know any of his work. Maybe a bit before my time.

@Marina - I agree :D

Hi Jamboeira,

I have 2 questions regarding Hankook Optimo 4S

- Where I can find them in Geneva?

- from Insurance point of View the usage of this model is Ok and considered as Winter tires

THanks

Mr_gasoline:

I bought them online via www.pneus-online-suisse.ch . They arrived within two weeks. Otherwise, every garage should be able to order them.

Every tyre with the snowflake and M&S symbols is a certified winter tyre. Insurancewise they are ok.

Haha, I've been around the net quite a while, and encountered many of this kind of friction like in here, Jawahara. I realized arguing is useless, because the more people think they know and possess the truth and rightous way, the more they are likelly to be off-track... Seemingly perfect lives can hide some imperfections too...

There is sometimes a little bit of truth in stereotypes. For example, it is true that swiss people are generally very obedient to laws. And accordingly, law enforcement measures are more drastic (for example, studies show that teenagers that are in swiss closed homes for delinquents have in average done smaller criminal offenses, than the ones in France). But even then, "A prison sentance would be the least you'd deserve." is obviously an out of proportion statement... imho.

Yes, Susan61, train is a good solution, and the one I picked! Une carte demi-tarif is a must though!
