Working for UN and other NGOs in Geneva

Hi,

Can someone tell me if there is a magic word to ensure that applicants to the UN employment area are actually granted at least an interview? I have applied for several communications/editor positions, but have drawn a blank on each occasion – perhaps because I have no prior experience within the UN system.

If any communications directors within the UN or similar humanitarian-focussed organisation are reading this, then please don’t dismiss this as a facetious attempt to release my frustrations.

I am genuinely keen to deploy ten years’ communications knowledge within what I consider to be an important and worthwhile field. I also have considerable experience in producing a wide-range of written communication materials (newsletters, press features, customer stories, case studies, news releases etc) for major international companies.

Please e-mail me directly through this forum if your department is seeking someone with a varied skills-set, broad writing capability and native English/fluency in French.

Thanks!

Keep an eye out for cinfo events. www.cinfo.ch. Once a year or two they hold an even especially for people looking to break into the E&Z world. Their expo in Biel is particularly good, but get on their mailing list perhaps.

They are nice people and seem helpful.

Martin

You are welcome. It is worth pointing out that the recurring theme at every consultant apero which cinfo host is "Why can I not get to first base with organisation X, Y or Z. Many individual consultants come to these aperos. I have previously suggested that cinfo acts as a central repository to allow individuals to find out about others with like interests. I work for a consulting company and we do quite a bit of hard engineering type work ;=) for organisations such as SDC etc. Almost all the aid and development organisations work with people they know, therefore if they do not know you it is pretty hard to break into the scene. Good luck.

Maybe we catch up at an event somewhere.....

Dear Maiden Fan,

You asked: "Can someone tell me if there is a magic word to ensure that applicants to the UN employment area are actually granted at least an interview?" I understand your frustration but you should be more realistic. In the UN system making it to an interview is already quite an achievement, as of the X number (where X can be even 200!) applicants only 2-4 are interviewed. However, these organisations contract a lot of their work out, you should try to get small contracts and that way you can show your skills.

Best of luck!
