Hi Translator,
I do not travel much -from Europe- to the USA, but rather Europe->Canada.
However, I add my comment as it seems that airlines have north-south (Europe-Africa, North America-South-America) vs east-west baggage rules.
As the article reads, airlines have their own rules. Nevertheless, by now most of them take only ONE PIECE as they call it... and ask you for an arm and a leg for a eventual second piece of luggage (i.e. suitcase, sports equipment, music instrument, or other)! and also the only one piece that one can check-in (at least for Canada in my case) must not weight more than 23kg (in Economy Class) otherwise it can be up to 13euro/PER EXTRA KILO!
So far, I've not paid any extra monnies... but has taken quite an effort to learn to travel 'light', between home-home (Canada) and home (Geneva).
Thanks for your posting. Looking forward to more travellers' views.

I'm wondering if having silver status on Star Alliance will make the 2nd bag free as it does with the other carriers....

What comes around..
(1) "U.S. President Barack Obama wants to charge Canadians [everyone, actually] entering the U.S. by air or sea a $5.50 inspection fee.": http://www.calgaryherald.com/travel/Opinion+Entry+should+never/4306976/story.html#ixzz1Ec1C3aJo
(2) "According to the US Department of Homeland Security, the rule change could bring in nearly $110 million in additional revenues, but Canadian travelers would end up paying the bulk of this, said Canadian media", so there's an effeicient way to collect credit card numbers from foreigners, eh?
