World Radio Switzerland to be abandoned by the SSR ?

I just read in my newspaper that the SSR (Swiss Radio and Television society) could abandon the WRS.

It could be ceded to a buyer or just suppressed.

I don't know if you listen to it, but that's my bit of audio in English every day and  I just like to listen to it when I go to and come back from work.

I suppose another solution is to have the bbc app on your phone.

there's also another reason why I like to listen to WRS : they speak about my country  :))))))   and as I'm learning English, it's quite interesting as I can compare with what I read on my Swiss-French news. The fact it's repetitive is important for me.  But I understand some people don't like it.

There's also another meaning, if the SSR put it out of the Public Service : expats who doesn't speak a local language are not *important* (well, that's what I understand here, which is quite funny when you know that some people in the german part would like taht the English language be learned by school kids in place of french)

WRS is the best to get Local news, We are interested in whats going on in our Suisse Romande region than the neighbouring countries. Otherwise we have thousands of regional radios. WRS is the only one radio giving Local news. Either traffic or new Swiss Laws. It would be a pity if it goes down :-(

You can see the local area news stories posted on the Radio Frontier website. It's quite good as a source of information.

With all the foreigners (and locals) of geneva forced to pay 462CHF Billag tax annually don't u think they deserve at least one English language radio station? I seriously doubt with WRS down they'll reduce this tax.

Or should all foreigners who're here for 1-2 year assignments/contracts quickly learn french? that way, they should also learn local language of every country they move to... u can't be serious about it (unless Billag Tax office would organize free french classes :)

I don't care Frontier or other, as long as it's on FM frequency and i can listen for few minutes while driving to work... of course all of us can buy stuff on internet, but that's not the point

Radio Frontier's great but to me, it serves a different purpose. I go to their site to know about Swiss Romande and neighbouring areas.

WRS brings a whole different perspective. As a public service, it brings a lot of insight into the Swiss political & cultural landscape. Personally, I wouldn't mind if it were reduced to an internet service & it were to serve private interests, I think it would be entirely missing the point.

Seems the long term English spoken persons who live in Neighbouring France but work in Geneva, are not at all bothered if WRS exisits or not. Thus there is more favourism on Radio Frontier :-) What say?

Personally I'm not remotely interested in going to the trouble of buying an internet radio and changing the installation in my car.

I enjoy being able to listen to radio in English in my car on my way to and from work and hearing about the local news in English. I speak French fluently but really enjoy listening to WRS - I find it restful to listen to news in my mother tongue and think it would be a shame to WRS.

Actually, that's not the case (for me, anyway). I live in France and commute in to Geneva and enjoy WRS in the mornings (for the most part; sometimes a bit too much gabbing about things I don't care about, though perhaps others do). I've never actually listened to Radio Frontier but will check it out. Still, it would be a pity to lose WRS as I think some of their shows and music are damned good.
