You know you've been in Geneva too long when ...
1. You think Mulligan's and Flanaghan's have a real Irish pub atmosphere;
2. You don't think SFr 15 for a glass of Coca-cola in a bar is outrageous;
3. You read the Tribune de Geneve for news instead of finding a flat, job, or what's on at the movies;
4. You believe the newspaper stand might actually be under surveillance and pay the full 2 francs instead of surreptitiously putting in 20 centimes;
5. You think radar machines painted to look like lumps of cheese make them less oppressive;
6. You see nothing wrong in having a BMW Z4 with CD plates;
7. You buy the most expensive model or variant of everything from razors to cars;
8. You notice how dirty French cars are;
9. You live alone in a studio and have a cleaning lady;
10. You don't question why it takes 12-18 months and costs more than a million francs to build a modest residential house;
11. You start to wonder what's wrong when a train is more than a minute late;
12. You put on SFr 300 worth of brightly coloured lycra to go for a bicycle ride;
13. You think Swiss advertising is dynamic, clever and subtle
14. You think it's economically wasteful to have more than one brand of a product in a store;
15. You think getting up early is good;
16. You actually get interested in the local elections;
17. You expect the shop clerk to say goodbye after you purchase something;
18. You try to defend cartel based economics to a visitor;
19. You think that plaid jackets with flowery ties don't look that bad;
20. You think it's fair that you can only wash clothes once a month;
21. You wonder why anyone would want to shop outside of working hours;
22. You think it's OK to drive slow on Sundays;
23. You feel like you're broke if you have less that SFr 300 in your pocket;
24. You dress up to go grocery shopping;
25. You understand why Chinese food should cost more than normal food;
26. You prefer Swiss wine;
27. You wish that your town had expensive garbage bags too;
28. You think Thursday night shopping is really convenient;
29. You think that large American cars are 'cool';
30. You think it's cool to drink expensive imported American beers;
31. You prefer fizzy mineral water to tap water;
32. You throw a party and expect everyone to leave by 11:30 pm;
33. You clean up during parties;
34. You expect dinner guests to help with the washing up;
35. You begin to understand the subtlety of the Swiss cuisine;
36. You appreciate the differences between the cantons;
37. You feel really hungry if you don't start eating lunch by 12:00;
38. You have breakfast cereal for dinner;
39. You don't mind paying SFr 20 for a paperback book;
40. You think that Swisscom's approved telephones are better;
41. You buy a new one instead of getting it repaired;
42. You consider getting goats and sheep to graze in your backyard;
43. You only eat fondue in winter;
44. You complain to your neighbour about the noise when he flushes his toilet after 10 pm;
45. You become interested in the myriad of insurance offerings;
46. You become concerned about the color of your neighbour’s curtains;
47. You put Aromat on all your food;
48. You worry about getting a cold when there's a draft;
49. You become offended when reading this

...but if I tell you how many apply to me... I'd have to kill you.

Btw, I don't believe newspaper stand should be under surveillance. People should be trustworthy and pay the mentionned price because it's just fair !

Hobbes, more Swiss than he expected to be !

Well I think I'm ok, but anyway don't worry, the lake is not on fire!!! oooo er, actually I think I have been here too long.

I suppose you could also add you know you've been in Geneva too long when....

Cowbells sound soothingly musical
you buy your clothes from souvenir shops
when you pick up the litter that someone else has dropped

Ive always been very curious. I saw those newspaper things for the first time in Austria and was somewhat surprised, but in the end its not much different from what we have in the states (you have to pay the correct amount for the newpaper "box" to open. But once the door unlocks you could in theory take as many newpapers as you wanted)
So how does it work. Does someone just hang around watching if people pay for the paper? How do they know wether you have inserted 2frances or 10 centimes. What happens if they catch you?

Another crazy scheme I saw was in california at a vegetable stand. Noone would watch the stand, instead you could drive up, pick out your vegetables, calculate how much you owed and then place the money in a box. But wait! this wasnt a locked box as I have seen elsewhere. It was unlocked and had money in it so you could make change!! Granted, it wasnt a huge sum of money, but still, it wasnt just pennies.
Those crazy californians :)
