Swiss restaurants have improved a bit. They used to positively snarl if you walked in with a child.
Thank heavens for Italian restaurants. Those people know the meaning of hospitality!

But about service, I remember being shocked in the beginning when I would ask if they had any other colours or sizes in stock and they would retort "What you see is what we have!" I even had shop keepers tell me they didn't have an article, just because they didn't want to look!

But now, shopkeepers and restaurants in the States get on my nerves because they are so overly-anxious to please. Makes me think they might be trying to make up for overpriced crap products...

Hobbes, an idea: Go to the States (or Canada - it's the same gushing treatment, I even had a shopgirl in Toronto scream "Come IN! It's so GREAT your HERE!" at the Gap shop. That was bloody weird).

Anyway go to North America and try on some clothes that:
don't match
don't fit
are for someone of the opposite sex or a very different age
See if the shop-keepers are able to continue the gushing.

Another trick:
You know how in the restaurants they memorize the menus and recite them to you? Ask them to repeat over and over and then ask if you can change the menus or meet the chef or any other troublesome requests. See how far you can go.

I once took a dare and asked a cell-phone shop owner if he knew where I could buy a cell-phone.
He said "yes".
And I said "Oh Really? Where?"
And he replied "Here. In this store."
And I answered "That's good to know. I might need a cell-phone one day."
Exit.
