In the minefield that is satellite dishes and receiver boxes :-S , I'd love some advice on what equipment I need to buy to be able to watch British Tv channels (primarily BBC 1,2,3,4, ITV 1,2, Channel 4). Any other channels would be a bonus only. I don't really want to go down the bluewin tv route as I don't want to pay monthly. What I really need is a simple shopping list of items. If I look on ebay there are hundreds of different types/sizes of dishes, boxes, sky cards, cables etc...... All a foreign language for me. If you can help I'd be sooooo grateful :-))

Thanks for your speedy replies guys!
@ avi - any ideas what's the minimum size dish to get decent reception?
@ charlie/avi - say i'm not bothered about getting sky channels and don't want a yearly contract, do i still need a sky box or will any receiver box do? (i already have a Strong "digital common interface satellite receiver" box (model SRT 4404), but not sure if this is any good.......)

Yes, you can get most of the UK FREESAT (http://www.freesat.co.uk/) programmes quite well from the Suisse Romande area. I've got my 80cm dish aligned to the Astra 2B satellite positioned at 28.2º East. http://www.onastra.co.uk/68351/uk and I get all the UK channels for FREE other than my initial investment fo the dish and digital decoder.
Yes, your existing Strong SRT4404 can receive digital DVB-S broadcast and should receive the FREESAT broadcast. You don't really need a FREESAT decoder.
The trick is the alignment of the dish to the Astra 2B sat. Generally you need to position the dish in a south facing direction, free from obstructions. If you live in an apartment, make sure you are authorised to set up a dish. Then the fun starts in looking for the needle in a haystack. With a compass and sat meter. The Astra website has all the alignment information needed for your location.

Sorry, I meant Astra 2D 28.2º East satellite to receive Freesat broadcasts.

If you just want to watch on your computer, google zattoo.com. Seem to remember that I used it once or twice and it worked but came here to escape British TV. The download is free

Or do without UK TV?? !!
Or if you are not allowed to have a dish, like me, then you could rely on getting a VPN connection (several commercial suppliers - I pay £5/month) and get BBC iPlayer via your internet. And ITV isn't generally worth watching anyway!

David sorry i dont, but as you drive into Versoix from gva its on the RHS as you enter the village from the dual carriage way.
Emilie... your other option is to go the "internet TV* route which lets you fix a harddrive and internet to your big screen.... no idea how to do it, but many more technically able people on here might.

Thanks everybody for all your replies :-) The mind boggles at so many different options...... At first I was leaning towards dish + receiver so there'd be just a one-off payment and that's it. But an 80 cm dish is pretty big - just thinking it might swamp my balcony. So now i'm thinking the naxoo and dreambox sound interesting as you don't need a dish........
@fiona - sorry if this is a stupid question (i'm putting my pride aside here ;-), but i'm guessing you need cable for the naxoo box. The box must be connected to something, right?!
@john - the dreambox certainly sounds a dream if you get all that for free! when you say free, do you mean no monthly fees? and again, i'm presuming you need cable for this?
