I found this rather surprising - thought Geneva might be the costliest, so one learns something new every day!

Interesting, though misleading and misrepresented article as it goes on to say:
"On a cost per square metre basis, apartments in Geneva are the most expensive at more than 33 francs, compared to 30 francs in Zurich."
3.5 rooms is essentially "how long is a piece of string" as i've seen rooms which couldnt barely fit a solitary chair... so i would definitely focus of price per square metre.

For the same money that you will pay for a dirty, noisy, draughty apartment with no appliances in Geneva, you get a spotlessly clean, hermetically-sealed, spacious apartment, with all appliances in Zurich. Internet and telephone will be connected within a week and there will be no rubbish (recycling) or doggy-do's outside the apartment every morning.
There is also much more going on both during the day and in the evening, both during the week and at weekends, and people generally geet you with a smile and a 'gruetzi' in the street, in shops and on public transport.
In short, Zurich is far better value for money.

Furthermore, in Geneva, the kitchen counts as room, in Zurich not - did Comparis factor this difference in when doing their research?!

Some colleagues and friends who lived in both cities all confirmed that the rentals are about the same - maybe slightly more expensive in Geneva - but the quality of housing in Zurich is far superior to what you find in Calvin's town.
The housing shortage begin as far back as the 1970s in Geneva and nothing was done to find suitable solutions. Now you find crappy studios up to 2,000 fr. as a result.
Shame on the politicians and the urbanists who just were too short-sighted to plan the city and its suburbs on a long-term basis!

Geneva’s housing shortage dates first from the arrival of the United Nations after WWII which wasn’t helped any by the heyday influx of US businesses in the early 1960s.
