a thing of beauty...

... is a joy forever. Nowadays, people complain a lot (and unfortunately I can be one of them too). There are lots of things not going right here in Switzerland, but it still is a beautiful country. Therefore, in order to illustrate some of its beauty, I want to share this picture... And the rest of you can join me in showing switzerland's beauty in a photographical way...

Great shot!

Did you take it with a colored filter or are they natural colors? (Showing my absolute lack of knowledge about photography here...)

hi Kathy,

All natural. I just finetuned levels and enhanced contrast and saturation a bit...Just for your information: to the left is Finsteraarhorn and Schreckhorn, the 3 peaks on the right are Mönch, Eiger and Jungfrau. Shot from Kanton Zürich on a clear winter sunset :-)

So tell me, Nick, is Keats well-known in Belgium? Wink Nice posting, I like it when people share something positive!

My image isn't superb quality, and it's also a little small, because I pulled it off my CoushSurfing profile (the original is on my old computer, which I don't use much), but this is the view I have from my balcony, and I thank my lucky stars for it! Being able to see the mountains every day puts our little troubles into perspective. I'm so lucky to be able to see the sunrise each day and the moon rising behind Les Voirons. On a clear day, I can see Mont Blanc. Wonderful!

Wow, thank you all for posting such breathtaking photos. We really do have some talented photographers on Glocals. I love travelling around Switzerland and am always amazed at what a beautiful country it is. We are so lucky to be living here where we can go hiking for miles surrounded by beautiful scenery.

It's a photo-sharing app for iphones that allows you to manipulate and distort your photos - gives them special effects, basically.

Do I need to explain what an iphone is??? (Just pulling your leg!)

That's a good question Caro! Can you define cheating? Are we cheating when we put make up on our faces? Worth a Café Philo undoubtedly Wink

Having learned photography for 3 years for my baccalauréat and spent many hours in the lab at the time when silver film was the only support available (feeling old...), I can tell you that in photography, there's almost always a manipulation of the reality. There are a lot of tools you can use at every stage, during the shooting or in front of your computer. It's part of the art. To me it is not cheating.

Instagram will never replace a good camera. You cannot work on the exposure. It's just not the same quality. It's a nice tool you can play with when you are not carrying around a big camera.

However, if you've got a good photographer eye, you can make beautiful photos whether you're using Instagram or a professional camera. Indeed, the eye, the stand point, the composition of a photo can be learned but cannot be tricked... Laughing

Hi Jeffery,

I mostly use Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority and let the camera work the other settings out. I try to keep the ISO below 1000. Professional photographers use the manual mode and then you see their fingers go crazy while shooting because they are changing the settings on the fly. I'm not on that level (yet ) :-) And of course, I'm only showing the cool pictures, the 1542 other pictures that were blurred, unsharp, shaken, boring,... will not be shown by me :-) Often it's just trial and error, practice practice practice,  combined with some luck. I can just do my best and slap me on the head when I see how I f*cked up again afterwards :-( Oh, the single F/A 18 Hornet was zooming by during a high speed pass (around 900km/h if I remember correctly) when he dropped his flares... a very cool sight!!

I totally agree with your last sentence which is why I think the 2nd and 3rd photos (particularly) on Post No 6 are even more stunning when discovering that they were taken with a mere, very out of date, Blackberry. Surprised
