bicycles on public transport

I am about to buy a mountain bike and would like to know whether they are permitted on buses and/or trams.  I know you have to pay on the train, but not sure about the others.

Also is there a requirement for any kind of license? Maybe a stupid question, but you never know here!

Thanks for any feedback,

Emma

no license, but a tax disc is required (insurance coverage for 3rd party)... but check with the bike store, since thats been revoked by parliament as well, since most people have 3rd party risk coverage already as aprt of house insurance.

No idea about trams and or busses... I doubt it...

happy cycling

You can take on trams and buses - not sure if you pay - it will be explained on the ticket machine.  Trains - depending on the train I do not think you pay provided you carry it on yourself.  You usually have to take it to the guards van  You pay if you are sending it separately.  But some trains eg Golden Pass do not allow bikes.

Paul, I'm not convinced that you can take bikes on trams and busses:

http://www.tpg.ch/fr/service-clients/questions-frequentes/reponse.php?we_objectID=16186

On the other hane, I talked recently with a guy who regularly took his bike into the back end of trams (as far away from the driver as possible.)

It was my understanding that you can take bikes on the tram / bus so long as it's outside peak time. However, I haven't tried it recently, and the quote posted above does seem to suggest they've reduced it to weekends and certain lines.

On trains outside the TPG area, you do have to pay - in fact, the same price as for an adult with a 1/2 price card, so it effectively doubles the cost! But, you can buy a daily or yearly bike passes which makes it much cheaper if you're going to do it regularly.

No bikes on TPG except buses A-Z on weekends, as said above.

On trains: 12 CHF per bike fot the whole day (if you have demi-tarif; if not, it's 18 CHF), or a regular ticket (1/2 price if you have 1/2 tarif) if it's less than the 10/18 CHF. Reservation required (for 5 CHF) in ICN trains.
