chasing a thief in Jardin Anglais
Dear all,

Just a quick word of warning about cycling or walking through Jardin Anglais late at night and alone.

On Thursday night I was cycling back from the World Health Assembly and was for once wearing heels and a dress. I had my longchamp long handle bag wedged in my back bike basket, and normally put the handles over the saddle, but figured it was late and noone around and only had five minute ride, so did not.

Half way across the park on the lit path right near the water, I suddenly hear this fast running and then felt this heavy weight pounce on the back of my bike to try to drag me back. At first I thought it was someone I knew playing a trick on me and then when the guy get dragging me back I realised it was not. Then before I knew it he unwedged my bag and ran off.

Another male cyclist passing buy helpfully said I should go after him as he had stolen my bag - but no offer of help. But it did trigger an absolute rage in me. I am a freelance PR person and basically my whole life was in that bag. Laptop, phone, house keys, sunglasses, wallet etc. New expensive small sony - no real back up - the works.

So before I could even think further I was after him - in my skirt and heels - over the grass and chasing him round the trees, yelling at him at the top of my voice "vour êtes tarée - vous avez volez mon sac - voleur - tarée " round and round the trees and he was hiding from one to the other.

The more he ran, the more of a rage he put me in and at one point we were literally playing tag around this big fir tree and that is when he gave up and just threw the bag back at me in one direction and ran in the other.

I was so angry I almost chased after him again but saw there were two others watching in a bit of a state of bemused shock, so decided to leave it and go home. I got everything back except for my wallet. But phone, computer etc.

When I went to the police the next day they said not to go through the park at night and that that happens at least once an hour in that park. When they attack men they do it in threes and throw the bag from one to the other.

That it happens so quick that most people do not have time or do not chase after them or shout and they get away.  That normally they do not get too violent and jsut want the quick cash and phones. But they work in gangs.  Other most robbed places are train station and road outside of Kempinski.

So first avoid that area at night alone and second, if you are attacked, make a hell of a lot of noise and go after them- particularly women - they do not expect it and it takes them by surprise - but watch out for helpers!

all the best

Wow, sorry to hear that! Me and my hubby were robbed once too, and we also chased after the robbers and got a wallet back with some money missing.

About the police- they admit they know it happens, so why don't they monitor the park and put cameras there!

I've never seen more lackadaisical police officers than in Geneva.

Then again here in the US, the police are like on steroids and will pounce and punch the alleged criminal until they're lifeless.  Just recently an innocent bystander standing in the wrong place at the wrong time was mistaken as the thief and was pummeled against the wall, fatally hitting his head and now fighting for his life.

There was a post up on the forum last year where people were warning members of all areas around geneva to be cautious of.  we should have this posted in the geneva welcome or general section so everyone can easily read it.

letme dig up the threads.

ok.. there are many threads on the forum on places around geneva that you should be extra cautious.  just do a 'search in Forums' and type key words 'thief' or 'robbery' and you come up with past postings of members' ordeals.

Maybe we can have a 'alert' section on the new website where we can summarize or flag areas to be extra cautious when walking/traveling around.

A round of applause for samanthab. That's pretty impressive thief chasing skills. Well done! :)

YouMeCo: I would suggest that a paranoia section is the last section that the new site needs.

Hello Samantahab. Having lived for many years in Geneva, I know very well about the Jardin Anglais. These past years it's gotten worse and worse, it's a meeting spot for the drug dealers. Even during the day there is a feeling of insecurity, I avoid passing through there as much as I can.

Recently, a woman got raped really violently at that place, around 3am. It was a multirecidivist.

The only advice I could give to women, NEVER go round that park at late evening. Even if you are in company of friends, gangs hang around there.

And also, you were very very lucky that guy was alone. Usually, they are two or three, and could have weapons. As for the Geneva inhabitants, don't count on them to save you, they care about their own lives too much. Be careful about your rage, is a laptop worth a lung, a life, or a liver ?

Strange reply from the police. If you knew there was an area where there was repeated offences then why not do something to prevent it, never have this issue if a motorists speeds ,a camera is put up to prevent further offences..

Heh. It's a bit like that joke where you go to the doctor and say "Doctor, it hurts when I do this" and the doctor says "well don't do it then".

But... at the risk of stating the obvious, one of the above examples costs time, money, police officers, and precious calories, whereas the the other is a little diamond mine with the minimum of effort.

Yes. .It was stating the obvious.. It's so automatic for speeding.

If I was a policeman I think I'd rather kick some sh** out of someone who up to no good rather than collect money from a box that takes pictures .. or is it just me..

Indeed. One of the drawbacks of being a lowly member of the public is that you don't get to benefit directly from the cash from speed cameras. On the other hand, there is nothing (other than pesky legal details) stopping you from heading down to Jardin d'Anglais with a bat and dealing out a bit of vigilante justice. I recommend a Batman costume to mask your true identity.

A couple weeks ago on a wednesday at lunchtime, 12.00, a girl that I work with got her purse stolen in jardin anglais.

There were also 3 men. they kicked a football towards her to distract her and another guy ran off with her coach bag. The purse was later found in the parc des eaux vives. Took her laptop, ID, and money.

It was on a wednesday and the police told her not to feel bad as she was the 5th already that week! They said if you call the geneva lost and found the bags are almost always turned in and they chuck them soon after.

scary that it is even happening at lunchtime...

Kills me to hear that the folks around you (incl the other man on his bike) saw the whole thing happening, and didn't do a thing. Damn chicken-shits!

Same happened to me there about 1.5 year ago. I was walking, it was raining and my open umbrella saved me as I hanged to it holding firmly my bag and screaming.

Other guys were about 50m in front of me and of course backing him up not helping " a victime".

It drives me crazy that police knows prefrectly about it and doesn't put a patrol there overnight and the police station next to the lake is virtual / always closed.

Maybe we/ Glocals should make more noice around it as a Community !!!

I'm sure there are some police officers on Glocals and the site is certainly watched as well + Glocals have connections all around / example WRS.

Admin commity what do you say about it ?

Thanks all for the replies.

Since Thursday, amasing how many similar stories I have heard in the Jardin area.  Another Australian girl also chased the thief all the way to Pizza Paolo on Rue du Lac on her bike and got her friends bag back. The bag was taken while they were lying on the grass in the afternoon.

Also, I really wonder what on earth the police are doing. What with all these house  burglaries and others, they waste time with nonsense. The other day two policemen in a car spent a half hour booking me in the middle of the Mont Blanc bridge for crossing the zebra crossing with my bike on pedestrian green - so running a red light and then not having a back light even though I had a reflector and a brilliant yellow jacket and helmet. Hopeless!

FYI I would also be careful now around Plein Palais in the grassy bit opposite Cafe Remor at the beginning of the Plein Palais diamond - I was walking back last night and there are 50 + gypsies/Roma camping - literally under sheets and have apparently been there for three weeks or so - since Schenghen. So because of the "Freedom of movement" and the EU, everyone is allowed to legally move around and into Switzerland Though how that translates into sleeping in the open and living around the water tap in a public place for three weeks is a good question, especially as they are unlikely to be up to much good, begging being the least of it!  Presumably Knie and the other circus acts all need 101 passes to set up camp in Plein palais, but here nothing - and not a policeman or police vehicle in sight!

Thanks for the heads up about what happened to you - Must have been scary! I understand the knee-jerk rage reaction of wanting to chase the guy down, but I would definitely not advise/encourage others to do the same. You should scream and draw attention to the incident, for sure, but chalk it up as a loss rather than put yourself at even greater risk lke that. You were lucky - this could have ended much worse!

I'm thinking specifically of two friends of mine - both male, and neither mousy - who had the sh*t kicked out of them. One incident was late night, in the Vieille Ville some time ago, and the other was just a few months ago, walking across the Mont Blanc bridge during morning rush hour! He was surprise-attacked by a 3-man gang walking towards him: one guy elbowed him in the mouth, the other pretended to want to help him up while patting him down for his wallet, and the third guy's job was to kick him in the ribs. In fact, I've heard quite a few similar stories to yours recently, even happening in broad daylight...

I find this worrying. I've been living in Geneva for 10 years now. I've always thought it felt super safe (compared to most cities in the US, where I'm from) and had never felt any fear walking home alone here at whatever time of night (the only incident I've ever been a victim of was my purse being snatched from Au Pain Quotidien in Plainpalais some years ago). But something definitely seems to have changed over the past months (I've just returned to Gva after being gone for 8 months), there's a tinge of insecurity that I'd never felt here before. And I've had to be a lot more "aware" and cautious with my belongings/where I walk, etc.

Incidentally - You mentioned you were working a late shift at WHO... I believe the WHO still issues taxi vouchers for late-nighters during conferences, which is definitely worth taking advantage of, especially when you're carrying so much stuff and it's so late!

Thanks again for sharing your experience and may it never happen again!!

Corinne

superman or mousewoman, in underpants or in heels, the fact remains that Geneva is not nearly as safe as anyone thinks!

With the open Shengen borders it is likely to get worse before it gets better and before the police wake up and stop wasting time on Heidi hi cycling infractions and get on with dealing with the Leman crime wave!

superman or mousewoman, in underpants or in heels, the fact remains that Geneva is not nearly as safe as anyone thinks!

setup a rent-a-ratweiler at each corners of the park to safely bring the ladies across the park. no thieves are going to want to approach those dogs.

But the cops would happily ticket you for walking a rottweiler without a muzzle....

Backup your harddrive and your SIM card contacts and give a copy of your keys to a friend, there are some people who are not going to be so happy to be chased...but way to go, very impressive!

Very impressive! i wish i would have been around there to help you - would have given me an excuse to take out alot of anger... :-)

i actually have a differant experience with the police in Jardin anglais -  last summer i was sitting there at lunch time and all of a suddern i see a man on bicycle riding very fast and chasing him was an undercover police car, driving through the grass on the park (look very dangerouse to me, there were tons of people there). the cops were shouting for him to stop and after few second they just crashed into his bicycle slighlty, enough to make him fly in the air and crash 7 meters away from the bike. then they jumped on him and quickly took him to the car and off they went... the whole thing took 30 sec....

i must say i was impressed then. but hearing your story make me think it was an exception, and not a regular practice from the side of the police...

Nah, that was me on that bike. I didnt have my new tax vignette visible on the bicycle. Still here in Dollon, but the food is not bad, the views incredible, learning how to crack safes, and the rent is great! Can't recommend it more...

Be nice to think there stil are some males who would run after a thief - given that the guy on the bike behind me said " vous devriez le suivre il a pris vôtre sac!" with no offer to join in the chase!!!

But as my Kiwi friend said: Hell hath no fury like an enraged woman in a skirt and heels!
