creation of an informal work/study group
Well I am not sure where to post that one.
This is less sexy than a beach party but it is something I'd been wanting to do for a long time.

The idea is just to gather a little bunch of people who have equal desire to understand this world we live in.

The concept is not yet very clear, but the main rule is that someone would present a topic (ie with power point) for 20 to 40 min and then we would together explore and broaden the topic using everyone's knowledge about it.

It could be a monthly event, on a thursday or friday.

I've done it once at work where I gave a short history of anxiolytic drugs (I work in pharma research!). They seemed to like it as much as I did so I want to do it more often.

It is very pleasing to broaden one's understanding of this modern society and see how it is (quickly) evolving.

There are many topics I'd like to cover, such as

-how to make plastics when we don't have oil anymore?
-how can the US live with a commercial deficit?
-what is the "dumping"?
-How is pharma industry evolving? and do they care about curing people or just hooking them on their drugs?
-What oncoming revolution is the CERN preparing?
-how have sciences and technologies changed the modern world? (ie.internet, mobile phones, planes, etc)
- Why is Israel so aggressive these days?
- what happens to the US if the Euro replaces the Dollar?

the topic list is endless and just depends on you...

I am ready to prepare the first presentations, so I only need an audience :-)
then it will be your turn to share...if you want to off course.

so if you think it's a good idea, or if you have a slighlty diferent concept please let me know.

this is just an excuse to discuss and share our knowlege and broaden our vision in an informal atmosphere.

thanks for listening

and speak to you soon

Hi,

Sounds like a good idea, I'd definitely be up for it.

Just add some wine and maybe some tapas and I'm totally game.

It always struck me that what distinguishes Geneva is not snowboarding, partying, conspicuous consumption nor an exotic ethnic mix (let alone wine, intergender interaction and song) - after all it's outclassed elsewhere on all fronts - but the fact that there is a uniquely intense concentration of people working here on the big issues of the day, and a vast untapped body of expertise and policy wisdom -- very little chances for cross fertilization apart from sheer chance. many are hiding their intellectual light under the bureaucratic bushel. in short, this is a very enticing idea, and a very well judged set of issues to get started on... like Nancy i would attest to the integral value of wine as a productivity tool and incentive mechanism but i would be more flexible than her on the question of tapas ... bonsoir --

I think this sounds like a lot of fun. There was some discussion a while back on one of the boards (I think maybe the Site Admin board) about getting "experts" to give talks, and your concept slots nicely into that idea. People don't have to be the total expert in their field, but can still share their knowledge with other interested people.

I guess that is what I do with my cooking workshops, and they seem to be very popular events, so I can attest that there are lots of people here in GOL who are eager to learn!

Hi Kiriel,

and thanks for your support (and to the others also). Yes I think you phrased it right, it is just an opportunity to share our knowledge with others and together try to get a clearer picture of the reality. For instance, when you read the news, it is a great advantage to be able to read between the lines but for that you need some good background knowledge. This is what I'd like to propose.
Now that I know we have enough people to get started I need to find a place to do it. I thought the "maison des associations" in plainpalais could be a good start. I will all let you know...

thanks again

Looking forward to it :))
I am interested with the theme of global culture, among others and in having a glimpse of the ways to have fun at other places, how they fit with each others, etc..

Cheers,
B.
