hey i am in the process of redioing my cv to be specific for jobs and then translate those cvs to french. i am on step one of correcting the cv in english and i am running into a couple questions that i think someone with experience could answer for me over an email or respond to this thread. i want to find a job in the geneva/france area and i am NOT picky about what job. I really want to get a visa to live in either switzerland or france (preferably france) so if anyone could reply to this post or even better email me on [email protected] i would appreciate it. thanks kerri

kerri, that may be your desire, but no one wants to hire someone who wants "any job"
"and i am NOT picky about what job."
imagine if a guy asks you out for dinner, and says, "i'm not picky about who you are, i just want to go for a meal" how good would you feel? what would you think about the guy?
same goes for job seeking, the cv and the interview, it's all about seduction!

Hi Kerri,
Epicure is right. You have to show that you are very enthusiastic (even passionate maybe?
) about the job they offer even if it's cleaning the toilets.
Highlight your skills on your CV and also add a paragraph on your soft skills, like "adaptable, team player, creative, etc". Turn it positive, ie "not picky" would rather mean "adaptable" than "desperate to get a visa". Don't be too honest and don't be afraid to adapt your CV to each job offer. It could help maybe checking all the job titles and descriptions on jobup.ch.
Good luck in all your projects!

I think Epicure made a very good comment that you should take into account.
What I could suggest you is that before starting to recomposing/restructuring your CV, you think over very well what you would like to do, what you like to in general and how this fits into your "life goals" (as well as the past work experience).
I think only after that you can have a clear picture of what you need to write in your CV.
Good luck!

i used a professional company
http://www.vandjassociates.com/
now they are not cheap but then i think its worth it. they do agreat job and spend a lot of time getting it how you want, now to say its expensive obviously depends what it leads to.
to pay 100 or 200 GBP for a cv that gets you a job with a 20/30 thousand franc pay rise isnt too expensive and probably money well spent!

thanks peaky for the link to the cv service website. long diastance services ( like a long distance relationships) require face to face interaction. by doing your cv for you, you lose all the learning process that goes in to creating and "becoming" your document. i know this, it's my profession after all

this is not to rain on your parade or criticise you - IF your French language is not competent do not create a French language CV, it will only mislead employers.
This advice was passed on to me by a guy who has worked for decades here in an employment agency.
any way good luck

I will add that you should have a basic CV that can be sent out regardless BUT be prepared to modify to highlight or emphasise certain skills etc for the job you are applying for. Your CV is not set in stone

I also suggest you, once you finish composing a new CV, show it to some of your close friends and/or (former) work colleagues whom you trust enough. They may give you some good new ideas on how you can improve your CV.
Also, if you have difficulty in structuring your CV, try to find cv samples in google.

wow thank you so much to everyone for the thoughtful and helpful responses. I meant that I have a lot of varied experience-child care, communications, sports, and i could see myself being passionate about working in any of those fields
. So I will tailor my resume accordingly. I see the point about it being misleading to write it in french. I will continue to take french lessons this summer in geneva, should i include that on a cv that i will be learning french? Should i tell people that i hope to live here in my cv even though i am an american? I will be applying to restaurants, sports stores, communications jobs, and childcare jobs. i do not know at this point if i need to use a cv service. thanks for all the responses

I think it's better not to indicate what you hope you will be doing here in summer or later.

i would not recomend showing your cv to friends and colleagues, unless they are in the professional business for this type of work. for every person/friend/colleague you will have a different answer and opinion......you will drive yourself nuts! i mean it's like the blind leading the blind.
sample cv's on google: "one size DOES NOT fit all" if it were that simple everyone would have a great cv.
there is no way around the fact that you got to do the work, it will pay off in the end.( or in the interview )

I agree with Epicure's sentiments "one size does not fit all". Even recruitment agencies take a CV and then tailor it towards different jobs by trying to highlight the relevant skills needed.
You should just apply for jobs and tailor you CV to match those. Recruiters can tell those people who just use standard CV's and it doesn't usually work in the applicants favour.
It is hard work to create a good CV but at least some of your own personality will come through if you do it yourself rather than get a company to do it for you.

I think the only benefit in letting others look at a CV is for proof reading purposes - you can easily work for so long on a CV which has spelling mistakes which are not spotted - fresh eyes can help
