do we need police clearance certificates from home country?

Hi all,

We're newly arrived and trying to get to grips with this housing situation in Geneva. We've read that Regies often ask for "attestation de non poursuite", which we understand to be the equivalent of a police clearance certificate/criminal record check/whatever other countries call it.

The question is, will the Regies be satisfied with a Geneva issued one although we've only been in the country for a few months? Trying to avoid getting one from home as it will take months :-/.

Hi Estelle

Explain the situation to your Regies, and Im sure they will understand. I can imagine that it wont only take months from home even years, if not decades. Dont forget to ask your future boss or whoever brought you here in case they dont accept but I cant imagine that they wont accept that. On the other hand if things get nasty (like not getting accomodation), you have the Embassy which would help.

Good luck and enjoy your stay.

Forgot to mention that there is a South African Group in here which might be helpful as well.

Yes, absolutely.  As soon as you're a legal resident here you have the right to obtain a attestation de non poursuite.  The attestation does not report the time you've been living in Switzerland - could as well be one week.

You can order the attestation here for 14 CHF.  It will be in your mailbox within a few workdays.

You can also go in person to get the attestation. It will cost 17 francs and you will have to wait in line  for it. There are always many that go.

Best to get there in the morning before 10 if you can, is the quickest

46, rue du Stand
1211 Genève 8

guichets open 8.30 - 15.30 non stop

Hello Estelle,

Please note that the "attestation de non poursuite" is not a police clearance certificate, but a document showing that you have no debts.

As it is quite easy to obtain once you registered, I'd recommend you to get it as the régies prefer people providing this document.

Ah yes, forgot to say above, if you choose to go in person you need to have your passport or identity card with you.

It is cheaper online, but if you need an attestation quickly for the next day (for example been to see a flat the evening before and want to present papers almost immediately in order for your application to be one of the first complete ones), going in person is a good solution

But the attestation de non pursuit has nothing to do with embassies. Im a bit lost on this answer. This is the document that shows you do not have debts and not the one that says you do not have a criminal record which is called Caisse judiciere (not sure of the spelling)

Hi Estelle

As the housing situation in Geneva is dire, why not live just over the border in France - so much simpler [and less expensive too]. Just a thought. There are lots of us here!

The "non poursuite" has nothing to do with embassies or police or criminal record. It just states that no one filed a debt charge against you with the authorities.

Even if you just arrived, you can get that document.

Hello Sheila,

Estelle's apparently from South Africa. "Frontalier" is normally not an option for "third-country nationals" (non-Swiss and non-EU/EFTA nationals), from the immigration point of view (not eligible for a G permit unless in very few and restricted cases).

Hi Marcy

You might be right but there are many ways of skinning a cat. That was one of my ideas and Im sure it would function if really needed.
