do you find this strange?
on a topic kind of related to Sherri's thread, this happened to me.

i signed up for an activity and got a mail back saying i had to join the person's network to get all updates (time/place etc) on said activity.

now, i felt slighlty uneasy joining the network of someone i'd never met. i originally thought the person had done it to make it easier to contact all the people coming, seen as we still can't send mass mails to anyone who's not on our friends' list. but when i asked, it seemed it was all to make it more convivial from the start. a good argument. however, i still don't want to join a network of a person i've never met in person. whilst i don't know everyone on my network equally well, you must draw a line somewhere and meeting the person is certainly a requirement for me.

but so, in the end, it appears i won't be able to join the activity as long as i'm not on that network, which seems a bit too exclusive to me.

thoughts?

Guess its because in the inbox now you have the link to send an email to your friends so if everyone is in the network its very easy to just use this.

Otherwise it's pretty arduous to find each person in the member list and send email messages one by one (unless there's a quicker way to do this I haven't found yet).

Maybe it's just that and nothing suspicious.

that's not at all what i meant! the easier email thing was what i thought and that's what i asked about, but it didn't seem to be about that at all. i just think it's strange to ask people to be your friends before you've met them, that's all...

I can understand organisers asking people to join their list to make communications easier. But if thsi is the case, I would assume the organisers make this clear in their request that you join their network, and that after the event the organisers remove you from their friends list (unless otherwise agreed).

it's your personal call.

Personally, I only add to my network (and vice versa) people who I really know and consider as (even if just remote) friends.

That would create your own private "block-note" list, not visible to anybody else (so it wouldn't be an issue if I'm added to the list of somebody who's curious about me, but I still don't even know) but that would make it easier to send them emails when organizing an event, for example.
Can we do that?

one 'friends' list that needs approving and could be visible (if the member wants it to be), and one private 'contact' list where members could add who they want without joint-approval and with the list being private.

we will see when we can launch this.

Thanks for the great ideas!

It would be ideal to have groups within your contact, so you could email all "roller addict", "sailors" or "tree monkeys" at once, for instance. This would save me this boring Excell spreadsheet business.

Idealy, every contact could be part of several groups, and added in any using checkboxes.
