if you connect your tv to the cable wall plug ( a uhf connection ) you may find you have picture but no sound. that being said, most modern tv's are multistandard and you just have to adjust from/to the pal G system from pal i .  see list http://countrycode.org/tv-standards.

if you have a cable box from one of the providers, just connect the peritel/scart plug and you're all set :-)

brilliant thanks - my TV is an LG flat screen bought in December 2008, quite recent so hope it will work.

by cable box you mean e.g. Swisscom TV? (that is what I am probably going to subscribe to)

To get Swisscom TV you will need a special modem from swisscom on subscription which also provides hi-speed internet and free fixnet tel calls to swiss tel nos for <CHF 85.00 a month.it's the best deal and they give good free technical support-no 0900 charges!

You will also have to contact your electricity supplier-probably Lausanne Services Industrial to block off your old cable socket or they will continue to charge you for a cable subscription even though you do not use it!

you will receive a  tv licence charge from Billag even for a car radio!

Your freenet tv digital services from Uk will not work-but you can get all these programmes on swisscom tv.
