echo112 - pocket lifesaver app

I just wanted to mention this app for smartphones (apple and androids).

Echo112 is a free lifesaving smartphone app that sends your location to local emergency services, worldwide.

features
Display of nearby address and coordinates

Test function
No data? No problem: your location is sent by SMS
Field tested by Swiss Emergency services for the last two years, now available worldwide

Swisstransplant (which is the organization for the organ donors in Switzerland) has added a donor card to this app, and you can also indicate your medical need.

So I think it's something useful to have.

So do you really get the help you need or is it just to be able to harvest organs for someone else faster?

The Swiss Organ add-on is the "news" in that it was just added to the app for Swiss located residents but the app is designed for you to call emergency services in any country and they will be able to locate you. It is very useful if you are out on the street, in a town where you are unfamiliar or on the highway.

The Swiss version uses the Swiss Grid system to locate you to within a few metres (depeding on the mobile tower signal strength). This same grid system is used by the fire service and Rega etc.

The orginal app was designed about three years ago by some doctors at the CHUV.

Had the *opportunity* to use this app this morning as an old lady fell of the stairs in front of me.

As she was unconscious and bleeding from the head I took my smartphone and then, forgot what number to call.

Hopefully that app was there....

Ambulance was there 10 minutes after.

So it's definitely something to have on your smartphone.

Well done Bertrand.

A bit more information for those who do not know about the app so they will be encouraged to download it and learn how to use it (very easy).

The best way to call an ambulance, fire, police etc. is from a fixed phone as the emergency services automatically have the address. This is however not always possible (when you are out, in a differnent city, don't have a fixed phone etc.) If you call for an ambulance without this app, you will waste precious time to tell them where you are (in a canton like Vaud, starting with which city since one service covers the whole canton). Try finding a street sign and an address number when you need one.

The idea with echo112 is that you use the app to call, you tell the person that you are using it and they pull up the website where they see your phone number and the location (depending on where you are, it can be within a meter or two). They can immediately send the coordinates to the ambulance thereby saving valuable time.

The added feature with this app is if you decide to be a donor, you can give the details within the app. EVEN if the phone is turned off, the doctors will get a notification that you are a donor when you pass the special sensor at the entrance of the emergency entrance of most major CH hospitals. If they need to they can then proceed with your wishes even if they are unable to contact anyone in the family, hopefully saving one or more lives in the process.
