general question
i have been a member for a very long time and i must confess i am not that active anymore but there are things i see here on the forum i really don't like.

i was wondering what the people want to talk about here on the forums. is it really suicide, aids, dispraise of religions and stuff like that?

i know that some members like to talk about it, but i am simple not sure if GOL is the right platform for it. don't get me wrong, I am not judging anyone, or maybe i do, because we all judge, so let me rephrase that. i don't want to offend anyone, but i am simply very uncomfortable with those topics. i read newspapers every day, so i don't think i am closing my eyes to the things that are happening in the world but i think topics like that should be discussed by people who want to talk about them. there are philo dinners and i think it's a great thing.

GOL is about meeting new people, making friends and of course you talk about such things with friends, but do you go into public and just shout your opinions out? i don't and the few people who do are easy to spot since they have those weird posters with them and telling me that judgement day is about to arrive.

what i am trying to say is, that i don't think an online portal like GOL should be used to distinguish oneself.

maybe i am ignorant, but i really would like to hear what you think of it.

thank you for taking the time reading my post.

Just for the fun of it, the correct quote seems to be

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
Francois Voltaire

Or in the local language, merci a Google:
« Je ne suis pas d'accord avec ce que vous dites mais je d?fendrai jusqu'? la mort votre droit ? le dire » (attribu? ? Voltaire)

The forums used to be fun. I don't know what happened but everyone suddenly became soooo serious about everything. No need for repressing freedom of speech but for crying out loud, some people REALLY need to lighten up..

As GOL front page says 'It's all about friendly people meeting & helping other friendly people.'

What frienship is there if postings create such heated debates? When I read the one below on the 'genocidal catholic french', I'm really sad.
Even if the subject is interesting, it is not appropriate on this forum. What interest to post such a difficult and heavy subject here? that is not the purpose of this forum...

especially when the question ends with 'as long as this statement goes like this, i am not gonna make any comment about it....'...sorry LonelyPoet. if you do not want to make any comment about it, just do not post it!

If you are so much interested in debating about such topics, may be you should ask SiteAdmin to create a new forum's category for political and philosophical debates

These topics are certainly interesting, but posting about them on a website is risky to say the least. There will too easily be misunderstandings, people will get offended - doesn't exactly contribute to a friendly environment. Better to discuss in person with people you already know at least a bit.

It actually seems like people are staying away from the forum as a result of the attitudes and opinions being posted lately. I think this is a shame. While, yes, one has a right to post what one is thinking, there is value in knowing one's audience. I think that the responses (and lack thereof) lately attest to this.

This discussion about 'too many heavy topics' is real important, cos it touches base principles behind GoL. We're not sure ourselves how to best progress, but here's raw thinking, with hope of more feedback from you...

1. Overall, we need to find the right balance between what the majority & the minority of the community wants.
Part of being 'friendly' is listening to others, and part of being realistic is recognizing that if too many posts that are less relevant to the majority of members appear, many members will turn away from the forums.

2. The issue is NOT that 'heavy' topics shouldn't be posted on GoL, but rather how to ensure these topics are posted WITHOUT taking over the forums (as many members feel has been the case lately).

3. Two key things drive the 'heavier' topics taking over the forums:
- a real increase in the # of 'heavier' topics
- some members who used to post 'lighter' discussions stopped posting so often.

4. We see 2 solutions:
- heavy topics: we'll agree with the main members who enjoy 'heavier' discussions to still post their views, but to allow for greater balance by posting less often then today, and only in the 'General' forum
- lighter topics: encourage members who prefer 'lighter' discussions to actually post them...It was nice to see on this current thread some veteran members who used to post a lot, but now rarely post. If you really want to help find a solution guys, then you can help by posting more...

That's about it...hope to get more feedback on this.

Nir

Separately, many of the members who enjoy deeper discussions are also members who help other members, welcome others, and do & join many activities. The last thing this community needs is for such friendly members to dis-engage from us following this thread. We want you with us guys...pls help us find the right balance.

I agree that people shouldn't stop posting "heavy" discussions. We've had some really great debates about immigration, religion, fossil fuels, etc. But your point about balance is dead-on. Thanks for the well-written POV.

With you last post it's not a question of balance, but of content...you're simply saying things this time that don't belong here.

No one is trying to 'take by force' anything from you, and no one is asking you 'to die for it'.

Calm down mate, it's a friendly place here. no need to talk about force and death...(-:

Are you trying to freeze your account or leave?

I don't think anybody has asked you to do this, or wants you to do this. I don't see anybody disliking you!
