glocals 'Mobile Communications Guide'-what should it include?
Hya all,

If you have 2 minutes, could you pls let us know what topics you'd like us to cover in a new 'mobile communications' we'll publish online soon? Here's the details.

We're putting together several basic online guides, in English, aimed at making life in CH easier for expats (like this Insurance Guide). One of the guides will be a guide to Mobile Communications (phones, mobile contract & prices, hand-helds, mobile internet, etc), with the help of one of the major global mobile carriers.

If you have 2 min, could you pls share with us what specific topics YOU'D like us to cover on the Mobile Communications guide?

Thanks,

Nir

Hi there!

Thanks for continuously improving the site...

Here's a small idea: since expats (and locals) are prone to go abroad, make a small section about the roaming and it's price. It's always a pain in the @55 to recieve a three-digits bill when you come back from a mission!

Thanks, and good luck with the guides

good idea.

2 watchouts:
keep the guide simple, and don't turn it into a selling tool for the carrier you mention is writing it for you.

1 request:
allow members to post questions to the guide.

topics i would be interested in seeing:
- are there any real difference between the mobile phone carriers except price
- how (the hell) do i understand the pricing difference between all the mobile carriers
- what mobile phone plan is best for me if i travel abroad very often
- can i cancel my mobile phone contract after i signed it (especially if I move out of CH)

Here's my short list

Roaming definetly.

Contracts and what type of permit is required by which company (Swisscom is usually more flexible I think).

Special Rates for young people  (had the Swisscome under 26 tarif but only for 2 years since i discovered it way too late)

... nothing else comes to my mind, will let you know if i can think of something else.

Great initiative thou! I loved the insurance guide!!

A few things I would like to see in the guide:

1. List of providers/options for mobile phones in Switzerland
2. Explanation of what sort of documentation (work permit, housing proof...) is required in order to sign a contract with a carrier
3. Explanation of main procing plans available
4. Explanation of what happens if I need to cancel my contract earlier than expected

Thanks alot

Oded

I think this would be a very useful addition.  Among the questions I have are:

Does one company offer a one good overall package for fixed-line, ADSL, and mobile?

Which company's plan offers the most flexibility?

Which company has the most responsive customer service?   Oftentimes dealing with Swisscom is a nightmare, especially if you have to go to their location in downtown Geneva.  I went once about Bluewin, waited 40 minutes, only to be told that Swisscom and Bluewin didnt have anything to do with each other -- at that time.

Thanks for the continuing updates to the site, guys....

Hi! I have an M-Budget basic mobile and just add on/but extra credit when I need it from time to time. Can I text to other mobiles at same regular cost when I travel to other neighbouring countries like France, Italy, etc.? I'm a mobile neophite!

Thanks!

For prices and rates, which can be a tricky matter, I think that it should refer people to comparis online costs comparing tool (http://www.comparis.ch/telecom/mobile.aspx). A simple 2 minutes check on it allowed me to cut my mobile expenses by at least 2!

What a great idea. Thank you!

I travel frequently to other countries in central, easter europe, middle east and Africa and need to use my phone for calls and text messaging on occassion.  For example, my Swiss com mobile bill was 900chf after my trip to Morocco in March of last.  I used the phone for calls to Switzerland and the USA. In addition, I texted to Switzerland and also to Morrocco.

Torey: thanks, but what is the question you're suggesting that the guide should cover?

Hi - this sounds like a great initiative. Thanks.

My request:

I actually live in Ferney (France) but work in Geneva. It would be great to know which carriers have the best products/services/terms and conditions for those of us that live in the border areas. Is is better to get a Swiss mobile carrier or French one?  Thanks!
