does anyone know how to do this? im just back after a long break and some of my fav tv shows would really help with the homesickness! channel four has a wonderful on line site but the videos cant be viewed outside the uk. i know there is a way around this by switching servers (i think??) but i know nothing about I.T. please advise if you can:o)

Just a tip: I believe that Bluewin TV is now offered by Swisscom and no longer called Bluewin TV.

Swisscom's basic channel package includes the aforementioned UK channels for 19 CHF per month (29 for DVR + HD).

And now for the sneaky IT way of getting anything online that is restricetd by geography ...

The server you referred to is called a "proxy server". You can seach for "proxy server UK" or "anonymous surfing UK" or "anonymous proxy UK".

What you need is a UK based proxy server so channel 4's (or any target website) will see the proxy server as being 'the web user' in their required region.

What you have to do is to go to the site of the proxy server (eg XYZProxy.co.uk - fictitious name). Then type your desired web address (eg channel4.com) in an 'address field' on the home page of the proxy server instead of the address bar of your browser.

The proxy server then effectively grabs the web page that you want and displays it in your bowser. It acts as, you guessed it, a proxy for you.

NOTE: you could add the word 'free' to your search. There are lots of free proxy servers but many have a lot of sneaky limitations. Ultimately they want to make some money. Many free proxies are here today and gone tomorrow.

It is easier to pay a small amount of money and at least you know they will be there next month. But my recommendation is you pay the CHF19 per month for a TV package ... it is legit and you get a lot of extras.

BTW, the above proxy method applies to any country and any sort of website.

Have fun

Just note that it will take a while to find a good (ie fast, easy to use, reliable) proxy, especially one that is free. But once you find one then you can go back to it repeatedly. So if anyone expects that after 5 minutes search it is all done, then that may not happen.

BTW, there are some sites that list all the proxy sites. Using such a site is easier than trying each proxy site individually becuase many search results when using free, sneak into the results by stating the word free but in reality only offering a free trial period, after you pay them for say one month.

Be very careful and once you find what seems like a good proxy site, search for its name using something like this:

"XYZProxy.com review" and "XYZProxy.com fraud"

Read what you find before you register even for a free site (which might spam you to death).

Happy surfing

I've never found a reliable, free proxy, the ones that let you connect tend to be terribly slow and not good for streaming, so asBizhan says it'll prob be a bit of work to find one. I get a lot of UK channels anyway via Cablecom. Cablecom have a terrible reputation for customer service, so much so that I heard they were going to rename themselves to try and rid themselves of it. Never had a problem with them myself though. Good luck!

Can't beat CHF6/month!

Checkout this page for the prices starting with CHF6 :

http://www.cablecom.ch/en/index/tvradio/digitaltv.htm

And this oen for the unbelievale list of 115 channels inc a big range of English ones AND Channel 4 too:

http://www.cablecom.ch/en/sender_dch_basic.html?region=3001&flip=9#a6003

I've read both pages to several time thinking I made a mistake ... still not sure!

Enjoy.

note that the cablecom 6frs service does not have an hdmi connection for actual digital tv. so if you have a flat screen tv you will not be getting the full digital quality that it was intended for!!

on the other hand, a small dish antenna and a sat tuner will cost you a one time payment of about 200 sfr.and that´s it. no monthly charge. best picture and audi quality. and ......all the latest free to air chanels when they begin to broadcast.

also, cablecom also will charge you a 26 sfr. per month for on top of any other charges for the cable connection service + the cost of internet and digital phone ( if you want it)

epicure - So you are saying that cablecom will charge the CHF26/month on top of the CHF6/month even though they do not mention it anywhere (that I can see) on those info pages?

And does your suggested set up of dish + tuner provide acces to the likes of Channel 4 as Manics1984 wants?

Thanks for the info.

yes, you can indeed. i have a system which actually looks at 4 seperate satellites at one time, but you don't need to have all that. i'm just a sat fanatic :-)

the charges on top of the 6 frs. are the so called cable line rental ( in vaud, it is managed by SATEL in morges, which is a cablecom owned company, and does their own seperate invoicing apart from cablecom)

of course for the sat dish, you need a line of site view to the astra satellite at 28.2 degrees east. ( if you can see the sun at 12 noon with no trees or buildings in the way, it should be ok.

if you have a new iphone, you can use the electronic compass app. and see if you have a clear view at 154 degrees approx.

This is what epicure is referring to - its all free and easy to receive in Gva.  If you are actually in the UK or have visitors coming from there you can probably pick up a second hand box on ebay for £50 without a PVR recording system (Humax Foxsat), it doesnt need any activation or UK address.
