iPad 2 Purchase

I'm going to buy one but can't decide on whether or not to get the 3G version.  Any thoughts on that from those of you that have an iPad already - either with or without wifi?

Also, perhaps I am looking at the prices (via Orange) incorrectly, but iPads actually don't look more expensive in Switzerland than in the USA.  Should I wait and buy one in Switzerland?  I think you can switch out the SIM cards if you have the 3g, right?  I will be at Orange soon anyway to buy a new iPhone since I need a new phone number, etc.

Thanks for any advice.

Ipad is not flash compatible, but you can watch youtube videos without problem.

I would advice the opposite. This model is both more expensive and heavier. And the benefits are meager in my opinion. For the 3G to work you need to a simcard and a subscription but all you will have is data. Currently 3G internet in Switzerland is a complete joke. Most subscriptions are something pathetic like 1GB per month, which most people reach in 2 days. And if you go outside of switzerland it will not work, or you will have to pay insane amounts.

Thanks for your input, everyone.  I was thinking of using it for travel purposes (so the 3G outside of Switzerland), but it sounds like the same deal with my iPhone - it works but at a high price.

Matt - are you getting rid of it for a specific performance reason?  Like maybe a laptop works better for your usage or you peruse a lot of sites with flash?

you do net need the 3g if you will also have an iphone. why? because the iphone can be easily linked to your wifi ipad ( personal hotspot) and you use it just as if you had a 3g on your ipad. but, you only need one mobile subscription.

so, you save on cost of the ipad, and no need to have a 2nd subscription.

hope this helps :-)

Yeah, it works fine, but I do find I'm on my laptop mostly and I'm barely using it.

So most of the advice here already covers it but to reiterate a bit.  With an Iphone you can use mobile hotspot to get access on your IPad, I have done it and it works fine.  My second piece of advice wasn't one of your questions but I would encourage you to buy one with more than 16 gb.  Mine is 16 gb and as soon as you start puting movies or TV shows of reasonable quality it fills up quite quickly.

Otherwise I love my IPad and use it for both work and play.

maybe the icloud will allow you to store movies too. it will allow for music and other data files, so if tv shows and movies can be stored on the icloud, 16gb is clearly sufficient for the ipad. ( icloud and iOS5 to be released shortly )

Well that depends.

a. For personal files there will be limited storage space allowed (5 gb is free)

b. If you bought the files from Apple then unlimited storage but:

c. This will also depend on internet connection.  If you are away from internet you cannot get content from the cloud and even if you are using mobile bandwidth you won't want to use all your quota streaming gb's of video files.

16 gb is clearly not sufficient for a lot of people and it costs very little to get the extra memory.  I don't know how much music and videos you have but for me and many people I know, 16 gb won't fit a fraction of their files.

right, need the memory so that you have your files even when you're disconnected.

I STRONGLY reccommend to get the 3G version if you are travelling regularly.

When abroad and out of wifi range (who will use an iPhone as a hotspot from roaming???) you can get a prepaid iPad microsim in ALL Apple countries: I already have a Swisscom (CH), SFR (France), Rogers (Canada) and AT&T (USA) all bought between 0 and 25 chf and prepaid plans go from 5 to 20 for a period from 3 to 30 days so you can have easy access to internet whereever you travel for a very good price with instant activation. To compare to the pain to hunt a free wifi spot down, pay for an hotel access or outragous by the hour airport fee, the ipad in its 3G version is a good solution and quick to amortize (once you have decided to buy this expensive gadget ;) Go for 3G!

Is the iPhone sold in Switzerland unlocked (you can switch SIM cards/chips)?  The last one I bought in the USA does not have that capability as far as I know...unless maybe you 'jailbreak' it?

Thank you everyone for your thoughts on this.  It's rather fascinating to see the alternate ways one uses a product.

Beware of Data Roaming charges.  I used my ipad 3G in china to check google maps, and the Maps application a few times and came back to find a CHF 500 data roaming charge!  I didn't use it to surf the net as the hotel bedrooms have wi-fi, so it was only in the streets when I was lost that I had to use Google Maps on 3G.

By the way, if you already have a telephone SIM card, Swisscom will supply you a second one free of charge for your IPAD.  But be aware, you can only use one SIM card at a time to use 3G.  The last machine to be turned on gets the 3G signal.  Sometimes neither phone nor iPad seem to have any 3G signal due to conflicts of both 3Gs being turned on at the same time.  That can be very annoying when you need to connect to the net in a hurry.  It's usually not enough to simply turn off one of the 3G signals and turn it on again, nor can you make the iPhone start working by simply turning off the offending 3G signal on one of the devices, but rather you often have to turn the device off and on again to get the 3G signal back..

If you have both devices on,and can't see any 3G signal you have to switch one of the devices off and then on again, and it will get the signal for a while, at least until the other device tries to connect - e.g. to download email.  This can be very annoying if you have left your iPad at home and forgotten to turn off the 3G.

Although an iPad is great, you may want to have a look at some of the Android tablets that are coming out now. Most notably the Amazon Kindle Fire that's expected in November. It doesn't have 3G or a camera, but it will be a great device and it will only cost $250.Amazon doesn't reveal presales figures, but a leaked report says that presales are already higher than that of the first iPad.

As a result of the Kindle Fire launch you should expect prices of other tablets to go down as well, possibly even for the iPad.

As for roaming 3G, this may be of interest: http://www.transatel-mobile.com/en/subscription-international/data.html (it is, however, unclear what category an iPad might fall into).
