iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch Users: iOS 5 (will be) released today!

Today at 10:00 PST or 19:00 Swiss time, iOS 5 will be released for iPhones, iPads and the latest iPod Touches.

There are TONS of great new features in the iOS, but just to be sure, Siri is not one of them. That's only on the 4S, afaik.

Gentlepersons, start your (download) engines.

Hey! I actually updated the OS at 5h30 am when the servers were less busy... I just found your forum entry when looking for a possible solution to a Swiss iphone problem: How do I make iTunes store talk tome in English or French? It shows me options only in German, as I am based in Switzerland. Maybe you will know. Thanks in advance!

you can change either or both of two things: the region that you are in and the language of the interface. with the iTunes store, you should change the region to the place that the associated payment is made from.

That might help or maybe I didn't understand the problem very well.

Maybe you could help me...My iPhone 4 is still on iOS 4.1...

I have tried downloading the new ones since, when I eventually get around to hooking up my phone to my comp, but each time it times out (after downloading for up to an hour).  At home I have a shit internet connection, but I also tried it on a better connection and the same thing happens.

Can I go to the Apple store and have them update to iOS 5?

@elke the problem is that you have to use *your* computer to update your iPhone. Do you have a laptop? maybe you can bring it to work? or Boreal on Monday when I'm there? Or the Apple store.

Getting to iOS will take two upgrades, once to 4.3.5 (or something) and then to iOS 5. Plus, you will need to update iTunes on your computer to 10.5.

I went to the Apple store in Bahnhofstr, and the guy there updated my IOS for me on one of their Maxcs. Very easy. You then connect to your laptop to "restore" your data

Hi, so my problem was that all emails from Apple, license agreements, confirmations after updating systems, some itunes store options etc were coming to me in German. I went to the Apple store and they helped me. They directed me to this website https://appleid.apple.com/, where, after logging in, I saw that the langauge set for correspondence was German. Changed it to English, and listo! Have a good weekend. X

So I've downloaded the new ios 5 and it all works well except every time I sync my iphone and my computer (mac OS X 10.6.8) now I get the message below. If i click on 'Continue Restore' it reloads everything back onto the phone but moves my apps around and deletes anything that happened since I downloaded ios 5 (ie photos, text messages). If I click 'Cancel' it syncs just fine. I'm too terrified to try 'Delete Backup'. Does anyone know what I should do to stop this from happening every time I plug in my phone?

iTunes was interrupted while restoring the contents of the iphone 'Jaclyn C's iPhone'. Would you like to restore this iPhone again now?

Depending on how big the restore is it can take several hours for the whole process. First time round I disconnected as I didnt think anything was happening and then noticed things were missing. When i connected again it asked me to continue restore. I let it continue and at the end everything is exactly as it should be.

Dont delete a backup. But also dont use sync. Providing you made a backup right before the ios5 upgrade (always essential) then that is the one that should be automatically, or maybe in your case manually, restored. For manual restore, connect the ithing, when it is detected by itunes, right click on the ithing icon and select restore from backup. There may be several backups so choose the most recent one.

Your problem that you loose everything since the last sync is expected.

Good luck

Hi Paul,

Thank you for the information. My Ipad is a 32gb and unfortunately I have already stopped the backup once and nothing happened so I started it again and it doesn't seem to have moved for well over an hour. Although it is  a 32GB I have only used around 5gb of space so far, so I cannot see why it is taking so long. All it says is that it is syncing on my Ipad. So the only way I can restart and do it manually is to stop the current back up, or is there another way. I never had any problems like this with my Iphone which has far more data on it.

Hi Lucy

I recommend just leave it attached. There is some reconfiguring to do from the software upgrade which takes different time on each different device. So long as there is a pop-up window in itunes saying sync or restore or something that suggests that it is working then leave ev connected

I also thought nothing was happening. But when I went out and cam back 3 hours later it was all restored. A watchewd pot never boils as they say

So finally got iOS 5 working (turns out my iTunes was the one to blame, it refused to update, so after an uninstall and starting from scratch, I was good to go)

Now, whats the deal with iMessage? First of all, is it just like whatsapp but only between ppl with iOS 5? does it tell you who these people are? and when does it say "waiting for activation"?

Thank you!

Hi Elke,

Imessage I similar to whatsapp and is between ppl on iOS5. The only way I know how to tell who is on it is that if you go to a friend that you know has an iphone and go to compose a text message when you type in their name a blue bubble will appear next to their name if they have updated to iOS5. As for "waiting fo activation" I have no idea as I never had that on my iPhone.

So finally I have updated and it looks nice but now I have a problem that it says that 4.3 GB is used up by "other". Is this some issue that I should worry about or is it normal and its the size of the update? If its the second then maybe I will go back to ios4...
